1^1 Her Power for Mischiei Exaggerated MED1TERRANEAN QUEST10N
(Br Telesrraph-
-Copyrisht.)
(Beceived 5, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 4. Criticism of the defences of Malta and Gibraltar and the Government's weak attithde in the face of Italian blufing was expi .ssed in the House of Lords by Lord Strabolgi (Commander Kenworthy). He said that Italy's power for mischief was greatly exaggerated. She was extraordinaxily vqlnerable with her armies seattered in Libya, Ethiopia and Spain. The situation at Gibraltar alarmed him. It was not an invulnerable fortress, as had once bpen thought. Lord Stfic.land (recently Governor of Malta) appealed for an improvement in the defenees t Malta. The Marquis of Dufferin and Ava, replying, said that |ne defenees of 'Malta were being taken'in hand rapidly. Experts dit" not consider Gibraltar untenable. Britain's soie concern in the Mediterranean was an undisturbed highway. A sincere understanding with Italy was oue of the main conditions of peace.
