FINAL GALLOPS
Training Preparations For ! Waipawa Meeting INTERESTING TRIALS
(By "
'The Barb.")
The final gallops for the Waipawa race meeting to be held on Saturday on the Hastings, racecourse were got through this morning and, though there was nothing of an outstanding nature, the trials were interesting. The tracks are in excellent order, the general verdict being that they have nevor been better at this time of the year. There is a thick 30le of grass all the way round on the course proper,- bo that, despite hot weather,- there will be an absence of any jar. Only two gallops were done on the course proper. • • j Eoyal Minstrel (H. Gilmer) did his final gallop yesterday morning when he was sent alone once round the plough", . but the writer only got him the last seven which was done in the very fair time of 1.29i, suggesting that his owner-trainer has succeeded in keeping him up to> the high pitch in which he stripped for his two successes at Wellington recently. a a a This morning Pakanui (L Briggs) was. the first to be sent along against the watch, running the last four furlongs in 514 and going much more generously than on Tuesday. . * » • Geira (J. Molloy), alone and against the bit, pleased by dashing over five furlongs in 64^. This filly is particularly fit at the moment, ' » * • - 4' Triplex (E. Marsh) was not liustled to record 52 J for four. The Tikokino mare will not face until the Napier Park meeting. * • * Fundy Bay (J. Dooley) and Seyfried (S. Anderson) were tried out in company, finishing together in 52J, both doing it well within themselves. Pladie (C. Shields) and Tres Sec (J. Forsyth) were again tried out over once round. On this occasion, however, Pladie was "well ahead, at the finish, but in time ' fully a second slower than the same pair registered on Tuesday. * Wiuitangi (0. Anderson) had it on Tullamore at the end of three-quarters# of a'mile run ' in L20. The latter isT* poor track worker, but, all the same^ Winitangi i3 on the improve. - -■•> ' e Mahutai (S. Anderson), not kicked out,'_ran his three in 39J. He is aaother of ,the local maiden candidate* that is galloping better than" formerly. Flame Queen (I. Briggs), Thala (J. Forsyth) and Jacynth (J. Molloy) were by no means serious when taking 6SJ for five furlongs. They finished a» named, but the gallop was nq real test of their respective merits, • # • Hanraik (H. Callinan) ^nd Daryill (L. Cullen) took 524 for half a mile, with tho latter going the ' betterv Laughing Song (J; Forsyth) and Sweep'along (K. Brueur) were inated' over half a mile, finishing together in 52, with the former going the easier. • e s - Merry Simon (H. Callinan), on the course proper, accounted for Diana Tetrix (H,. Young) b'y three lengths . over three furlongs in 39. Even allowing that Merry Simon has fully recovered" from his shin soreness, Diana went ' much below her best and her poor showing is hard to account for unless, of course, she is reserving her-. sclf for Saturday. • » • Iddo (S. Anderson) again registered 1.18J for six furlongs, though carrying over a stone more than he ' did on Tuesday when doing the same time. • , • • Larwood (L. Cullen), who appears to have improved considerably this last week or two, t pleased a little better than did Buster Brown (R. Marsh) * when running the last four of their gallop in 514. ' • « • Top .Hat (I. Rohloff) made ea^jr work of negotiating a few of. tho schooling hurdles. He still carries a big kueo that he brought home from tho Wanganui meeting where he had his' last outing. • o o Kikiroka (R. Marsh) and Tupai (J. Dooley); was .a Jength ahead of Black Frost (J. Forsyth) at the end of four furlongs run in 52, but Black Frost missed. tho jump off losing threa lengths there. • o oi Parr^ (H. Callinan; and Top Hat (C. Plier) were only playing funs when registering 67 »or iive. ' Parry looks all the better for his Opaki and Trentham racing. Sir Nigel (S. Anderson), Haile Selassie (Gough) and Maine (C. Cameron) finished in that order" at two length intervals over six furlongs in 1.18 — as good as any timo registered this morn-. ing over this distanca, Cardlu (J. Dooley), Ihe two-year-old half-sistcr to Sardius, was not the equal of Quimper (J. McNaughton) over three furlongs in 394. This was the first time the former had galloped . on the plough, which may thus have ' been a little strange to her. On the course proper Fossicker (J. Walsh)* held the measure . of Gasman (E.. Marsh) over five furlongs in 64 — a" very fair effort, especially for the former who was carrying over nine jjtone, so that he must be on, the verge of returning to his best. Joe Louis (H. Young), also on the course proper and alone, registered 644 for five. He is still suffering from a sore moutli, hence his uon-acceptance for Saturday 's races. Enfin (.Treaey) went from the six to the two furlong post in 524. This Humbug filly was very anxious to go this morning. Slippery (R. Marsh) ran the half mile in 524 and looked as though he was wealcening over the last furlong. Soho (H. Callinan), brought home the last six furlongs by Pover Chief (Mr. G. D. Beatson), was clocked to do the full distance in 1.324. The last five. occupied a tick bettei; thau 66^ j
