CHEISTCHUECH, This Day. Training work at KiccaTlon this morning provided the final part of the gallops before the Canterbury Joekey Club 's spring meeting. The weather was fine before breakfast, but a cold wind sprang up after the interval. The outside of the course proper was open, but was not in. great request, most of the trainers preferring the plough, which was in good order, though a trille holding for the early gallops. There was a lot of useful work, but the similarity of time3 omph^sised tho open character of the New Zealand Cup as well- as other races. Except where otherwise mentioned the work was -done on tho plough. The Cup candidate, Wild Chase, was one of the first to work. He and Great Bramble broke away frqrn the mile and a-quarter mark, doing the first half-mile in 52aec. Mulatto then joined in, Great Bramblo dropping out a little further on. The Cup horse did the first seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, and finished his task in 2.10. He was going well at the end, and it was a useful gallop. Iiebel Lad, Sovereign Lady and Sunee started off from the mile post. The firstnamed pair were in front all the way, finishing together. Sunee was close up. After doing the first two furlongs m 26sec., and five furlongs in 1.4, the fu'll journey took 1.43 2-5. Both Cup horses were going well all througfi, while Sovereign Lady pleased her Spring Plate admirers. Cerne Abbas, Argentic, and' Lnge were again mates this time over a mile and a-quarter. The first-named pair were clear of" Enge at the finish, with Argentic going a trifle better. The first two furlongs took 26sec., four furlongs 51 3-5sec., seven furlongs in 1.31, and the full distance 2.11. Boomerang, Might and Cuddl.e were sent out for a mile and a-quarter. CudcHe caused a little trouble and lost a lot of ground, the trio settling down eventually in single file. Boomerang was in front all the way, registering 1.44 1-5 for the last mile, while the times of the other two were similar. Cottingham, Queen of Song and Small Boy were in that order at.the end of a mile and a-quarter run in 2.10. The first half-mile was done in 51 l-5sec. Though Cottingham finished in front he was b'eing kept going, and Queen of Song was travelling very well, while Small Boy, on the outside, was going very strongly ^t the end. Lowenberg and Friesland were to have had a sound gallop in company, but the former is a lazy worker, and the pair wound up by taking 1.39 for seven furlongs. . Trebleack had Milford for a mate over seven furlongs run in 1.31 3-5. The first four furlongs were ■covered In f>2secs. These two Southlanders look wel'l. Silver Streak Brilliant. Silver Streak galloped after breakfast and again set an easy record for a mile. He started off fast, the first two furlongs taking 24 3-5secs., five 1.1, and the mile in 1.39 45. Poi Roger joined in the last five furlongs, but Silver Streak beat him home, and his was a brilliant effort. The sprinter, Ben Braggie, went off slowly from the six-furloilg post, and registered 1.18 3-5, coming home well. Paper Slipper was given an easy round. Brundhild had' no trouble to beat Ardmayle over five furlongs run in 1.2 2-5. Waitaha and Moonraker took 1.18 1-5 for sis furlongs. , Rebel Chief was not hurried over a half-mile in 51 3-5 sec. Pelmet, Oratory and Laughing Lass were among those to do useful work. The classic 'candidates, Koyal Chief and Smoke Screen went well over a mile in 1.4'3, after taking 25sec. for the first two furlongs. Mob Rule and Maile took, 1.44, after doing 38sec. for three furlongs. ' Might, Dress and Lazybones were together most of the way while doing "seven furlongs in 1.30. The first half-mile took 51sec. The Crooner, on the grass, did a mile in 1.42 2-5, the first half-mile in 50 2-5 sec. He looks well. Guinea Fowl did sis furlongs on the course proper in 1.19 3-5, Great Memory accompanying her over the last four furlongs in 53 sec. The two-year-old Taurangi was in front of Peerless, with Rakahanga and Protector a few lengths away, at tlie end of a sprint down the straight from the half-mile barrier post. Gay Son and Raeburn went well while doing a half-mile' on the conrse proper in"48'4-5sec. ' Godfrey took 52 2-5see. Red Sun did a mile and a quarter in 2.12 — a good effort for a hurdler, the last sixfurlongs being done in 1.30. Haughty Winner sprinted half a mile easilyin 52sec. Alunga beat Kindly over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5. Swordstick and Cardsharper were going well to do 1.16 3-5. Wine Card beat Roshingham over six furlongs in 1.17 4-5. Triune and Parquet beat Dollar Prince over the same

distapce in 1.17 2-5. ,Gaysome beat Rebel Queen in 1.19, and Paper Note took 1.18 for a similar distance. Rousseau and Top Row took 1.17 1-5. The Best Six Furlongs. Sir Hugh did the best time for six furlongs, beating Happy Night easily in 1.15 3-5. Grey Honour was not hurried over five furlongs, and The Bigot was given easy work. Fiord and Solwit took 1.50 for a mile, time which John Charles equalled. ' Petersham led Dictate over a smart half-mile in 49sec.. while Drinkup and Clubman did seven furlongs in 1.30,. after registering 49secs for . the first four. Eedolent and Eoyal Grafton did a mile in 1.47, while Tarboe did a halfmile in 51secs. On the course proper Trench Figbt went about a mile, taking 1.32 4-5 for the last seven furlongs. Big Dook and Lickem did seven furlongs in 1 .31 1-5. " Koyal Amphora and Silver Sight covered six furlongs in 1.20, while Nolana brought home by Patuma, t00^ -U20 3-5. Dividend ran five furlongs in 1.5," Phalanx and Epic taking 1.4 4-5. The jumpers, Superex and Gold Boy jumped the brush hurdles and then did useful work over six furlongs. v Apprentice Injured. C. C.
