"GUYS" ON PARADE

Hastings Children Hold Procession flecord number of entr1es An invaslon of Heretaunga street took place in Hastings last evening when the juvenile section of the comndunity had one of their "big nights" of ihe year. This was the annual Guy Fawke's procession arranged by "Uncle Ed." of 2ZL. and the entries constituted a record. The actual number of "guys" entered was 81, five more than last year. ' In almost every instance "guy" was attended by two youngsters, if not three, and in quite a number of instances pro- • prietorship was claimed by f our or iive children. There can be not the slightest doubt, after viewing last night's procession, that the children are as keenly interested in the traditional celebration of one of the outstanding incidents of English history "as ever the children of previous generations were. Truly custom dies hard. Hours of fun must have been spent by the children and xemarkable ingenuity and enterprise was sliown by the majority. No twor "guys" were alike and they ranged from doll proportions to man-size. There was a surprisingly wide range of conceptions- of what -the original Guy Fawkes appeared like, the effigies ranging from true tramps to xeal gentle-manly-looking figures. .Led by the- Hastings Boys' Band, the procession moved off from Nelson street amid a battery of crackers and other fireworks. Heretaunga street was lined on both sides by a great .throng of people who thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed the spectacie and derived. as much fun out of the show as did, the young•ters themselves. _ Along Heretaunga •treet went the procession and then turned into Hastings street to fiuisb up in a vacant ection in" Queen street where the two judges, Messrs. H. Campiu and C. H. Bennett, carried out their far from enviable task.. The resuits of the judging were as foUow: — Bill Geenty 1, Les Thomas 2, Douglas Grant 3, Jim Fear 4, Arthur Blakie 5, Gloria Hook 6. In addition every entrant was given a chit for a few pence yorth of fireworks, this being made possible by the grant of £5 from Messrs. E. T. Kelly and Allan- Gordon.
