Review of Performances for To-morrow ORAC AND CR00NING
(Special — From
AUCKLAND, This Day. Runners at Whangarei to-morrow and on Saturday appear to be iiot quite aa numerous as at previous meetings at -the northern' centre, and courae withdrawal8 will still furtker deplete the xiumbers. Hard tracks througiiout the province. are iu part responsibie for this production, but for all that competitiou will be keeu. enough and winners not really easy to iind. Many horses are in two races and several of these" will iulfil botli engagementa. Betting will be eonducted .under the wiu and piace system and in iive of the eight races there should be " sufiicient runners to ensure three place dividends. 3Iiss Lu, who heads the Whangarei Cup field to-morrow, is not a big maro and unless an apprentice rider is pui up to receive the benefit of an allow-. ance the weight may bother her. She finished fourth with 9.0 in. the Members' Handicap at Avondale three weeks ago, being behind Kilonsa, Airam and.King Musk, so that with-her burden lightened in the direction indicated she ' may be difficult to beat. . Improvemont is anticipated from Orac, who this season has run some really good races and at least one moderate one. However, this track will suit him and he should stay out" the ten furlongs here, especially if allowed to liave matters his own way out in front. Te Hai is useful, but has continually disappointed, while Bonny Gay would be a distinct possibility if rain came. Tybalt has iiot slipwn any form at all so far this peason, and as he has previously r'aced well at Whangarei he may do better after his racing, for ho is well seasoned. bergia raced weli over a mile at Avondale last month, while Tip Toes is a promising stayer and a fecruit from the hack ranks, ' She is in the last race too and she should show up in whatever event is choeen for her. Mai de Mer, a maiden, completes the Whangarei Cup field anci as he stays on his chance is not altogether as hopeless as it may appear on actual performances. Tlio form horse of the octet engaged is certainly Orac and he may do best, although one cannot be over-sanguino, for he has failed too oftea to be a really good horse.' With an allowanee Miss Lu may be the etumbling block. * ■ Severad Speedsters. In comparison, the field for the1 Manaia Handicap^ the open pprint tomorrow, is- vastly superior to that in the Cup, for the quality is almost up to Ellerslie standard. Rereatu has yet to make his appearance this season' and may need racing, while Tosh ran two fine races at Avondale and he looke the form horse. Miss Lu will go well here if reserved, and so too will Tray Bit, whose fine finishin'g effort at Avondale three weeks ago indicated that he was on the return to his best form. Airam will possibly be reserved for the final" event; has gone to Riccarton to contest events on latter days of the Cup meeting. Crooning has .alwaye raced well at Whangarei and may again >rise to the occasion, whil© Paso Robles and Bachelor King indicated early ,succe3s by their runs at Avondale last month. OrooniUg must' make a big appeal, for she was a winner. in the Avondale sprint at her last start, although there may hot be much betweeu her and Tosh, Tray Bit4 Paso Nobles and Bachelor King. There are so many possibilities in this. event that the draw at the awkward six-furlong post may well help to decide the issue. In the Minors. In the minor events the following should go well: Drdll, Hikurangi Hack; Raceline, Spring Plate; Kilberis, Hurdles; Viracious, County Handicap; Huntingmqre, Kensington Hack; and Airam or Tip Toes, Parahaki Handicap. The form horses- engaged to-morrow are the following:— 2.10— HIKURANGI HACK: Droll, Hopalong, Mai de Mer. 12.50— SPRING PLATE: Raceline, Ohmaha, Windcress. , 1.30— HUANUI HURDLES: Kilberis; Simint, Englishman. 2.10— WHANGAREI CUP: Orac, Mies Lu, Bonny Gay. 2.55— COUNTY HANDICAP: Viracious, Cliief Lap, Palardo.3,40— KENSINGTON HACK: Huntingmore, Prival, High Star. 4.25— MANAIA HANDICAP: Crooning, Tray Bit, Tosh. 5.15 — PARAHAKI HANDICAP: Airam, Tip Toes, Te Hai.
