Sites in Hauraki Gulf OFFICIALS INVESTIGATING ; . ♦ " > •

, AUCKLAND, Last Night. To investigate possible sites for the installation of xadio beacons at Cape Maria ,Van Diemen, Moko Hinau and Cuvier Island, two prominent oMcials of the Marino Department, Mr. L. B CampbeU, secretary, and Cap'tain W; Whiteford, nautical adviser, left Auckland for the northern coast in .the Government lighthouse steamer Matai to-day. An inspection is being carried out in connection with the plans of the department to instal radio beacons at varions points of the Now Zealand coast. A beacon has already been estab- . lished on Baring Head, near Wellington. Temporary equipment has been placed 6n Stephens Island in Cook' Strait, and a beacon is being constructed at Cape CampbeH, another Cook • Strait station. , When the Cook Strait beacons have , been equipped they wiU be foUowed by . installations on Cuvier Island and Moko Hinau Islahd. .These points were recently described by Captain Sergeant, harbourmaster at Auckland, as the "eyes" of Hauraki Gulf, when the necessity of equipplng them with radio directidu-finding beacons at the earliest possible mornent was being urged. It was held that snch steps would be taken for the safety of all overseas and naval vessels approaching Auck- g land during thick weather. A third beacon with which. the offieials wHl be- concerned on, the - Matai 's visit will be that at Cape 'Mana Yan Diemen.
