BUSY LONDON TRAFFIC
£50,000 Improvement j . " LONDON, Oct. 10. Vast improvements in the London transport .system, ushered in by recen't Acts of Parliament, are being carried ' out by the London Fassenger Transport Board at a cost of more than £50,000,000. With its 10,000,000 inhabitants, most of whom have to get to work or school at about the same time, London presents oue of the world 's most complicated traffie problems. The number of passenger journeys increased from 1,800,000,000 in 1911 to1 4,000,000,000 in 1935. In the handling of dense passenger traffie within restricted periods of time the railways bear'the heaviest burden. More than 9000 trains arrive each day at the great London* termini, and one of the principal items in the present development scheme is the further electrification of local serviees, which already represent the largest suburban electrification system in existence. Other improvements include the extension of underground railways, tho lengthening of platforms to take longex trains, and the re-signalling of many lines to provide for heavier traffie. In addition, hundrcds of new railway cars are being provided and motor-buses ara being replaced by larger and more comfortable vehicles at the rate of more than 500 a year.
