ANNIVERSARY DAY
Hawke's Bay Made Province in 1858 . Yesterday was anniversary day in Hawke's Bay. Hawke's Bay was formerly a part of the Wellington province and can point to no actual date as marking the birth of itsi settlement. It therefore marks its foundations by observing th© anniversary of its establishment as a separate province. Marlborough observes its anniversary day on the same day as Hawke's Bay. Of the two, Hawke's Bay is the senior province, being founded on November I. 1858. Under the New Zealand Constitution Act, six provinces were created in New Zealand — Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago. In later years further subdivisions took place and, as a result of tliis, the new provinces of Hawke's Bay and Marlborough came into being, 'the latter a year after Hawke's Bay. When the. Hawke's Bay province was formed it had a population of 1514. The first superintendent was Mr. T. H. Fitzgerald, wh0 was one of the principal agitators for separation from Wellington. Hawke's Bay was administered by its own Provincial Government until the abolition of the pro-
vinces in 1876^
