Two Austriana are ihe only men to have crossed the dangerous rapids. The Englishmen, Dr. John Stothert, aged 27, of Mount Beacon House, Bath, and Dr. Eric Martin Kee, 23, of Baverstock . Hill, London, H., entered the rapids despite the warnings of experts, and wero not seen again. Before their attempt they handed their passports and luggage to Herbert Snalko, a German, of Bernburg. Speaking on the long-distance telephone to London, Snalko said: "The last words of my unfortunate cornpamons were: 'It doesn't matter if the hoata go to h«U. We'Jl buy other ones. All that mattefs is that we should be the flrst, Englishmen to come through thoie cataracta.' "
