HAVELOCK NORTH DOMAIN

New Pavilion Is Nearing Completion IMPR0V1NG THE GROUNDS Havelock North 's long-cherished ambition to provide its domain with a fully-equipped pavilion worthy of the residential suburb is now rapidly nearing realisation. What was once a hilly paddock with ,a stream running througli the centre of it hast in the ispaca of about eight years, been levelled off and converted into a large domain and sports ground. The latest enterprise of a far-sighted board, the handsome concrete pavilion is now well on the way to completion. The building has been so- constructed that it can be used in conjunction with - Ihe public swimming baths when desirable for carnivals or special occasions. The pavilion building stands behind the baths building and the ehower-rooms and dressing-rooms open directly into the baths enclosure. The pavilion consists of a kitchen, two changing-rooms wifh. showers for the use oi athletes, and a main hall, 30 feet by 16 feet with a high arched ceiling, suitable for a tea-room or -for meetings. This room has a large firepiace and will prove ideal for card evenings and similar functione during ihe winter months. It is also large enough for carpet bowls or.table teuni3 and the floor, which is not yet completed, will be of heart matai so thaft it can be prepared for dancing. •'We are considering running a fair on the same lines as those held in the counties in England," said Mr W. H. Anderson^ of the domain committee, when conducting a reporter over the new building this morning. "The idea! of the committee responsible for the erection of the pavilion hae been to provide & building of use to all sports bodies, which will also be -capable of playing its part in bringing together the people of Havelock 'North. In the summer we hope to have dancing on the green in front with a buffet supper scrved insidg. fWe will also endeavour to revive the old open-air . community concerts which provcd so popular during tha earthquake period, and for this purpose we are installing light3 along the front of the building. A terrace is to be constructed along the front of the pavilion and here it will be possible for Ihe band to play. "Another -aspect we have in xnind is provision for camping in parts of the' ground, in which case the amenities provided in the pavilion and the baths will make it a particularly fine camp." A drive thiough the domain m now in course of construction and this wfll have the added effect of shortening by about half-a-mile the distance to Napier from the higher portion of Havelock. The position of the pavilion is ideal. It has been built in a position to cafer for tennis, . bowls and croquet, ehould - courts for these games be later laid down. • Although the outer framework of the building is practically completed, there still remains much to be done inside. The walls have yet to be lined and tha floor of 'the hall is not yet laid, It will be possible for the entire work to be completed within the originai estimate of £500, but more money is now required to finish the job. ' Up to the present £360 has been spent on the undertaking aiid it will need about another £100 to complete "it. The floor will be finished b"y voluntary labour from tradesmen and the materials are already paid for, but money is needed for '/showers and other facilities for bathers and the use of sports bodies.
