£8000 A WEEK
•William Powell, star of "After the Thin Man," who sailed for Europe in the liner Statendam recently, will achieve a new Hollywood record in the contract by which Metro-Goldwyn-May-er are loaning him to Twentieth Cen-tury-Eox, for he is to be paid £8000 a week for six weeks. Powell is said to have asked Darryll Zanuck, Pox's production chief, tcg, consider an alteration in the proposea title of the film he is to makey— P "Jean." Though ' the title is not connected with Jean Harlow, Powell fears the title would lead fans to believe that he was trying to capitalise her death. The previous highest weekly salary paid to any star was the £6000 receiv* ed by Constance Bennett for a number of engagements in 1932-38.
