The Work for the Blind
s/m.
LYDFORD,
Sir, — As collector foj; the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, I have again been entrusted with the appeal in Hawke's Bay for funds for the general purposes of the institute. Within the next few weeks I will call upon the business community in the district, who have so generously supported us in the past, and I feel sure that the appeal will receive the saxne help this year, I also hope to call on as many of the country people as I can get to with a guide, but this is an extremely hard job for a blind man, and I earnestly appeal to them to help by sending in their donations direct to me at the address given below, when an official receipt will be forwarded. There is little need here to emphasise the work done by the institute, but it might be news to many to know that there are about 850 blind people in the country, all of whom are potential sharers in the benetits of the institute, almost 200 being maintained at the institute, while tba others receive help by way of grants in various ways. Sir Clutha . Mackenzie, the director, his staff and the board of trustees v are a wonderful team of workers for the welfare of the blind, and do not allow their keen business ability to overshadow their human interest in the work. Tho institute is a happy home for those living there and a good place to work in, and blind visitors, and especially those lately • blind, are made to feel very welcome there, and come away feeling fhey have made friends. In. this I can speak at first hand, for I am a frequent vjsitor there. i'wenty-five years ago the instituto trained me to be self-supporting. They are still doing the same -work for others They are doing it with. you? r, "r B+S,
