Speaking at a National Savings Movement meeting in London, the Home Seci^etaiy, Sir Samuel Hoare, said that Britain' s rising figures of tkrift at a time when men and women of other countries were refusiug to invest money in the bonds of their own Governnients were due to public contidence in tlie future. He referred to the movement as oue of supreme national importance. Te savings made through it rau to £1,400,000,000. Even more significant was its annual growtk — £40,000,000 in the past 12 months. Lord Mottistone, chairman of the National Savings Committee, said that the savings o.f small investors in various forms could not now be less than £3,500,000.000. People abroad, he added, eiroply refused to believe these figures.
