"It seems to me Uttei'ly paradoxical," said Sir Arcbibald Sinclair, M.P., in a l'ecent spCecb, "that a number of well-intentioned people Who profess belief in tbe League of Nations and in collective security, and who desire peace, should oppose tbe adoption of such measures as tbe Government has framed for tbe defence of tbe Ooun^ try against air bombardment. Because such measures eannot give 100 per cent. security against air bombardment, they object to them being undertaken at all. Cambridge scientists are being roped into the eumpaign to declaro tliat gas masks and gasproof clianibers are useless. Surely, scientists who want to preserve peace and discourage aggressiofl attd sUch outrages as the bombing of civilians and the uSe of gas would be better employed in holping to increase the eifectivcness of defensiVe measures than in trying to prevent their adoption.
