GANNET SANCTUARY
Season Opens at Cape Kidnappers AMENIT1ES FOR VISITORS AlthoUgh unfavoui'able weather marred the opening of the gannet sanctuary at Cape Kidnappers last week-en.d, a number of visitors havo made the trip to the Oupe during the week aiid everything is noW in readiness for next week-end when there is suro to be a large exodus fi'om Hastings and Napier if tno weather is fine. There are now additional attractioUs for visitors at the Cape,- these having been prdVided during the off-season by the board eontrolling the sanctuary. The most acceptable of these will undoubtedly be the pfovislon of a watdr supply of '600 gallons at the sanctuary for tno benefit of picnickers. The water supply coiisists of three 200-gallon tanks, contaiiiing rainwatee. At the present time these are all full, and this supply should last for the greater part of the season, but "wastOfulness will have to be guarded againstt as the supply depends upon rain for replenishment. Over 300 young treea have also been planted and these appear to be makiug good ptegresS, although the reai ted* will Come in the summer when it it excessively hot on the Cape. The teoebfc rain has been of considerable good, The tfees have beeii planted on an area % little more than a quarter-of-an-acre ia extent o£l the terrace just above, ttae beach, in&crOCarpa and karamu trecs predominatiitg. The ganriehs have pfacficaliy &11 ftturned and taken up residence in the sanctuary.
