In a beautifully sunny morning, His Majesty tke King, accompanied by Her Maoesty tke Queen, opened tke first Parliament of kis reign, tke occasion attracting tke .biggest crowd evei irnown for a State opening. Tkeir Majesties aeknowledged tke greetings of tke multitude en route to tlie House of Lords from Buclungtiam Polace as tkey rode in tke glass* and gold State coaek drawn by eignt Windsor Greys. Yeomen of tke Guard, in pieturesque costume, marcked beside the coach. Three mounted equerries were in attendance, and five semi-State landaus, accompanied the Eoyal coach, carrying the ladies and gentlemen of the Eoyal Heusehold. - Time-honoured pageantry was observed on the arrival at the House of Lords. The Prime Minister, Mr Neville Chamberlain, was unable to be present owing to an attack of gout. His plaee in the House of Commons tonight will be taken by Sir John Simon. The House of Lords presented a brilliant spectaele, with peeresses in fur coats over evening dresses and diplaying glittering tiaras. Princess Elizabeth was first to make obeisance to His Majesty. Princess Margaret Eose accompanied Princess Elizabeth. Both were hatless and attired in rose pink coats, The 'King read the speech from the Throne slowly and without hesitatiun. with only one or two pauses. Annou'ncing the probable course of business in the Housn of Commons (states an official wireless mesage) Sir John Simon said that the debate on the Address-in-Eeply would be concluded early next week. Dealing with Government Bills, Sir John Simon mentioned first the Ooal-Mines Bill, which would be a complicated measure and with which the Government hoped to make substantial progress before the Christ-. mas adjournment. Other Bills most likely to be introduced soon would be the Oinematograph Films Bill, the Sea Fisheries Bill, the Blind Persons Pensions Bill, the National Health Insurance Bill. Air Eaid Precautions Bill, a Bill for appointing additional judges, the Eural Housing Bill for Scotland, and thg Expiriug Laws Continuance Bill. These, said Sir Jokn Simon, migkt be regarded as the first batck. Tke following amendment to tke Address-in-Eeply will be moved by Mr Herbert Morrison on behalf of the Labour Party: "But regret that Your Majesties' advisers, by tkeir weak and vacillating poliey in foreign affairs, wkick kas gravely imperilled tke prospects of lasting peace and national Security, betrayed tke principles of tke League of Nations and seriously diminisked tke Britisk influence, and by tkeir lack of any constructive fundamental preparations for raising the standard of living upon a just and enduring basis, have forfeited the confidence of this House."
