TRENTHAM FORM

(Special to Herald-Tribune)

Features of the Final Day's Racing FAST TIMES RECORDED

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Features of the final day's raeing at Trentham on Monday were „ Eoyal Chiefs comfortable success ih the Harcourt Stakes at weight-for.age, and Amigo's performance in winning the juvenile handicap from Surmount in 58 secs., which equalled the Australasian record held jointly by Machine Gun and Paganelli. * * # Although rain threatened all day the course was again in perfect order and very fast times were recorded in all events.. * # =* Patagonia, who did not run on the middle day, won the Eona Hurdles convincingly. The two horses who beat him on Thursday were not £n Monday's field, and considering this fact his price was a very generous ono for a favourita. It. was not a real jumping test, for Boughal, the leader, knocked down every fence except one. This was Patagonia's third win in four rtarts over hurdles. Ho is a Gape Horn gelding, so stays well. Blue Tiger, the r.econd favourite, was always toiling in the rear_ John Charles ran a good raee, finishing.on strongly to just miss a place. The going was still too firm for him. * ° >» # Suleiman scored his third successive win in as many starts when .he led tho field home in the Spring Novico Handicap. He lay in. behind Lindrum and Kelative to the false rail and then drew out to win handily from Kelative without being unduly pressed. Suleiman is extra good, and Monday's win puts him into open company, where^ he will not be out of class. Kelative and Sigurd ran right up to form. Lindrum, was unlucky. being left to makei all the pace and he just weakened over the last 50 yards. Kockingham and Screamer were both unlucky in getting away badly. Parry ran a fair race. * ' # . # Kollicker, who was badlyj away in his race on the first day, led all tho way to win the Tararua Hjack Handicap. Wagner showed improved fo'rm and Sunny Blonde stuck on well. Great Hope and Koaming, prominent early, dropped out at the finisb. Alunga found the seven just a little to ofar for him and Taro never looked a possibility. * # « Amigo's performance in winning the Koseneath Handicap, following his pointless win in the Karitane Handicap on Saturday raises a doubt about whether the best horse won the Wellesley Stakes. In that event Amiga was twice knocked off his ballance, and then finished fourth. On Monday he sefc a terrific pace from Ortyx, with Surmount next, and he went on to score easily in 58 secs., which equalled Machine Gun's and P&ganelli's record for the distance. Surmount was not handled to the greatest advantage, but there was no doubt about Amigo's superiority. Ortyx just failed to get second. She is . coming more solid again, • • • Big Dook's Wainui Handicap form proved the right guide for the Pearce Handicap, in whicht he came at the leader, Oratory, and wore her down to win by a head. Dictate stayed on too well for SmaU Boy, who had overy

chance. Pukeko and Queen of Song looked likely at the half.mile, but both failed, although Queen of Song suffered a check. Old Surrey was handy to the leaders at the home turn, but once more he failed to stay. Ni£htdress was iii bother several times. • * • Koyal Chief ,at odds-on, won the Harcourt Stakes very comfortably. He was chopped out at the start, so Ellis drew him in on the fence behind the field and made no effort to improve his position until the final quarter, when he ran past the field with the greatest of ease and won by half .a length from Cuddle, who had made all the pace. The Crooner ran a splendid third and improved his chances for the Derby, in which the longer journey will be to his liking. Wild Chase, always handy, was a close fourth, followed by Kinnoull, who was rather disappointing. Koyal Chief proved himself up to class p.nd established a new time record for the race, Cuddle's performance was much the best of the older horses, • • • Laughing Lass hung on much better than she has been doing in her recent races to win the Nai Nai Handicap. She trailed Brunhild to the last fnrlong and then held off a challenge from Lady Ina to win by a head. Brunhild was weakening at the finish, but was only another head away third with Silver Streak l.nd Whirling, both up close. Whirling was last away and was stopped nearing the false rail. An opening approaching the false rail assisted Koyal Minstrel to win the Ruahine Handicap. Min Lu and Gironde made the pace to the turn from Koyal Minstrel, Tidewater, Lustral, Liane, Siegmund and Impersonator. • In the last furlong Koyal Minstrel drew out to win by two lengths { from Tidewaiter with Siegmund third, Gialteemore fourth, then Liane, Settlement, Impersonator and Cricket. Koyal Minstrel won well but Tidewaiter was unlucky in losing his position in the first half-mile.
