Government Employee Attacked by Maori Woman INCIDENT AT ORAKEI

Tbe Orakei Maori Village, near Auckland, was tbe scene of a personal combat between an elderly Maori woman armed witb a stick and an employee of tbe Lands Department who started to remove tbe f ence wbicb . encloses tbree native residences near the cburcb and cemetery site. It is understood tbat tbe purpose of tbe removal was to preparp for a roadway to provide tbrougb access to tbe new Government houses on tbe hills above tbe Maori village. Some years ago tbe Maori land on which tbe village stands was sold to the Government, but natives continue to live there. Tbe mattef was mentioned recently in tbe Native Land Court. When a' workman commenced to tcmove the fence stamples on Thursday laet a stalwart elderly Maori woman | protested vigorously, and, tbis proving I ineffective, sbe set upon tbe workman witb a stick. After an ineffectual defensive figbt, it is stated, be withdrew somewhat the worse for the encounter, and the work bas not since been resumed.
