(By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. When the dinghy which he was rowing in Ohiro Bay capsized shortly after 11 a.m, yesterday, Alan Melville McDowell, aged 24, was drowned. Watchers on the beacli included his parents, Mr and Mrs E. T. McDowell, of 10 Hapua road, Hataitai. The deeeased was employed as a salesman by ' Edward Collie, Ltd. Mr McDowell left the beacli alone shortly before the accident in an elghtiloot dinghy. After he had rowed for some distance, watchers on the beach saw tke dingy turn over. He was seen to strike out for a rock nearby, but as lits reached it he disappeared, and was uot sCen again. At the time the wind was srutherly, and a fairly heavy sea was breaking over the rocks. Tlie tide was setting strongly to the south-west. It is believed that the swell dashed him against the rock to which he was swimmmg with sufficient force to stun or wind him. Fishermen and police searched the coast all yesterday, but reports late this morning indicate tnat no trace lias been found of the body. The dinghy was recovered in a damage condition.
