Courtcraft's Good Second To Young Idea MELBOURNE NOTES

MELBOURNE, Oct. 24. The weather was fine and there was an excellent attendance at Moonee V alley. Courtcraft made a wonderful eff-ort in the Cox Plate to iinish second to Young Idea. Courtcraft was wellplaced throughout. He battled the issue gamely and was going as well as Young Idea at the post. His performance suggests he has excellent prospects in the Derby and critica were greatly impressed. Charles Eox was third. Black Mac disappointed his Cup adinirers by a poor display. Norrnal set a courso reeord of 4S| sec. for half-a-amile in the St. Alhan's Handicap for illlies. She was bred in New ZeaJand and cost 350 guineas. She has been unbaaten in two starts. Erill Prince surprised by winning the Valley Cup. Maia finished well in second place and Nightguar-d, who was always prominent, was a good third. Wotan made up ground at the finish but he was never dangerous. Jack Horner and International ran poorly. Manolive was lame after the race. Maia was unlucky, but his strong finish enhanced his Melbourne Cup prospects. Plying Chief was a close fourth in the Dundonald Handicap, second division, and the winner, Mohican, equalled the course six-furlongs record of 1.11J. Manolive broken down in the Moonee Yalley Cup and may not race again. , Black Mac was kicked prior to the start of the W. S. Cox Plate. Ho was lame to-day, but his condition is improving. Sir Regent is improving and his cup prospects are more hopefuL Limulet has contracted a cold and has bcen withdrawn from Flemington engagements. Breeze is coming from" Sydney to run in thti Oalcs. N. Creighton will ride Wotan in the Melbourne Cup, for which Frill Prince has been rehandicapped 41b. He now has 7.9. New Zealand horses' weights in the Hotliam. Handicap are: Wotan, 8.12j Flood Tide, 8.7; Willie Win, 8.5; International, 7.6; Black Friar, 6.7. In the illWiamstown Cup Wotan has S.8; Flood Tide, 8.6; Prince Quex, 8.3;. Sir Simpyer, 8.0; International, 7.3. New Zealand acceptors for Kyneton on Wednesday include: Kyneton Handicap, Gay Circle, 8.12; Jack Horner, 8.11. Novice Handicap: Luminare, 8.7. Encourage Handicap: Granvinj 8.4. Scr,atchings include Pantoon from ,the Derby and Ajax from the Melbourne Cup.
