HELP FOR CHINESE WAR-SUFFERERS

The appeal that is being made jointly by the New Zealand Red Cross Society and the Order of St.' John for funds wherewith to' send relief in organised form to the war-sufferers in Chma should not fall upon deaf ears. Of the tragic conditions that hold there as a result of modern methods of conducting warfare our cable messages and other Press news and illustrations probabiy ^ive us only a very f&int conception. Such as it is, however, it should be quite sufficient to stir in all hearts somefhing more than mere inactive pity, a desire to do something practical that may help in alleviating the widespread sufferings and miseries that have been mtiicted upon China's closely populated cities. The opportunity for all citizens of human instincts to do this is afforded by the opening of subscription lists to a fund designed to provide relief under . the auspices and direction of the two bodies named. It may perhaps be thought by some that the needs are so great that what little might be done in this small community would be almost negligible in its effect. But it is to be remembered that this is not an isolated effort, but part of a big international movement and that it is certainly for New Zealand as a unit in the British Empire to make a due contribution. The well known and highly organised activities of the international Red Cross provide full guarantee that the funds raised will be put to the very best purpose, so that there need be no pOssible misgivings in this respect. Coming from a little country so remote from the scene the contribution will bear a good deal more significance and encouragement to others to do likewiss than is to be found in the mere ^.s.d. reSulting, By request subscription lists have been opened at both the Hastings and Napier offices of the "Herald-Tribune," and amounts received there, as well as those lodged with or sent to the Mayor or Town Clerk of Hastings, will be duly acknowledged in its columns from day to day.
