hnportant Influence of the Pure-Bred Sire MAINTENANCE OF STANDARD It is now generally recognised by breeders throughout the farming community that in order to maintain and j improve the country's flocks and herds j only sires of the highest quality should i be used. The days of the scrub bull I and nondescript ram have jpassed, and I breeders are now concentrating on the I improvement of their stock by the use I / of purebred sires. I Prominently assoeiatcd throughout i the Dominion in 'the handling of pedi- ' gree live stock the New Zealand Loan | and Mercanitle Agency Co., Ltd., through its special Stud Stock Department, has an established reputation second to none in New Zealand. A feature of the service rcndered by the company to breeders is that all live stoek transaetions are executed on a purely commission basis and purchasers may, therefore, be suro of securing their stoek at ruling market rates, Consequently during xecent years more and more cattle breeders and floek owners have entrusted the selection and purchase of their stock to the ofiicials of this department, and the company can now justifiably claim to be the largest handlers of pedigree rams in the Dominion. "When placing their orders through . the company, breeders no doubt appreciate the fact that any purchases made on their behalf will be true to deseription and speciflcation. The Pedigree Live Stock Department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., is controlled by specially seleeted officers, i who haive had practical experience in | the breeding of sheep, cattle, horses : and pigs, and who are therefore in a iiosition to assist and advise breeders ; in the selection of stock inost suitable to tlieir requireinents. The company has recently appointed Mr Allan Horn, ' of Ohau, a well known breeder and jndge, as dairy cattle speciahst. For a number of years Mr Horn has been a member of the- Jersey Classification tlommittee and now his services are j tvailable to all breqders and he will bo only too pleased to visit farms and give expert advice or make selections on behalf of clients. During recent montha the company has forwardod couBlttumeuts of
stud stock to Australia, Japan, South Africa, the Argentine, and Uruguay, while arrangements for a shipment of pedigree stock to Falkland '.Islands have just been completed. On behalf of overseas breeders, the company has for some time past made seaections of Dominion-bred pedigree live stock and was recently successful in securing from Mr J. G. Alexander, Maxwell, a stud Eomuey ram hogget, for a well well known TJruguayan breeder, at a price which constitutes a record for a sheep of this breed exported to Uruguay. Amongst sheep forwarded to Bueuos Aires on consignment last year on behalf 'of Mr Wm. Rayner, "The Cliffs, ' ' Masterton, was a stud Lincoln ram which gained the Grand Championship at the Palermo International Show. Both for overseas and internal de* mand the company is ln a position to secure quotations for all classes of live stock from. any tireeder in the Dominion, and full information in respect of stoek available will be gladly furnished on application to any of the company 'g branches or agencies. Clients wishing to forward stock on consignment to any overseas markets may do so with every confidence through the New Zealand Loan Company, who attend to all shipping, feeding and forwarding arrangements, including insurance, at a miimum cost to the consignors. Importations of high class pedigree animals to clients' specifieations are also arranged by the company. The foremost authorities in Great Britain, Canada, United States of America and Australia are available to make selections of animals on behalf of the company 's clients, and breeders wisbing to import sheep, cattle, horses or pigs may obtain on application quotations, photographs, pedigrees, and full details of stock offeriug from any of the world 's leading studs. For those who do not wish to make importations from overseas the company is associated with numerous dispersal and displenishifig saies, in both islands, at which their requirements may be procured.
