Cerne Abbas Fails to Find an Opening GAY SON IMPROVES
(From
WELLINGTON, Last Night. A feature of the Wellington Handicap to-day was the fine effort hy Cuddle to lead all the way with 9.9 and then suffer defeat by the narpowest of niargins, Luck played a big paxt in the decision, and none was unluekier than Cerne Abbas, who was disappointed for an opening at the home turn and had to c.ome wide around the ieading bunch - and failing by two heads. Cuddle essayed an all-the-way win and failed only in the last two strides. Lowenberg and Sunee were both a long way back entering the straight and finished right up behind the plaeed horses. Rebel Lad was another lightweight to run a good race. Silver Streak and Small Boy were beaten a furlong from home. Argentic and Hunting Cat never looked likely. Queen of Song ran on improved race and was a very close fifth. Hlack Thread, showing a sharp improvement on his Hastings form, rau nght up to his best winter performances io win the Shorts Handicap, but if Whirling had not hung out badly in the final furlong he would have won. G}'Cy ilonour rau a good race, but appeaied just short of racing eondition. Joviality had every chance. Pakanui suffered ^cvere interfereuce when runniag prominently approaching tho false rail. Paper Slipper, looking very big in eondition, received a rough passage, Laughing Lass was prominent early and closed up a furlong from home. Gay Son won the "Wellesley Stakes like a true stayer. Surmount looked to have the field in safe keeping half a I'prlpng from the post where Gay Spn cqme up on the rails and. wore him down to win narrowly but decisively. Gay Son is Hastings-owned and has improved vastly with the Masterton oufing. Protector, a triple Auckland winner, collapsed a furlong from home. Minga ran well and so did Peqrless, who was pne of the last away. Donegal just outstayed Journet to win the Glen Hurdles, the latter having to cover extra ground, Three horses went out between the five furlongs and the home turn. A bad jump at the fence near the five furlongs ended liedolent's chance, The going was too firm for John Charles. Patagonia and Blue Tiger finished very fast for the minor places. The winner's time was a New Zealand record. Taurangi credited another juvenile euccess to Beau Pere when she won the Taita Handicap, She cost Mp W. McA. Duncan 525 guineas at the last yearling saies. Eiftk at the home turn she finished solidly to win easily from the Ilastings-owned Rakahanga, who has improved with the Hawke's Bay outing. Diana Tetrix and Godfrey had every chance at the finish. Lord Cavendish began slowly. Kinnoull won the Wainui Handicap brilliantly, and if he stands gound, 'looks certain to reproduce the high-class form he showed as a three-year-old. Although narrow, his defeat Of Catalogue was decisive. Big Dook was well placed all the way, but was unequal to the class of the iirst two. Nightdress ran a fair race and Tiger Gain finished very fast behind the placed horses. Suleiman's was the best hack performance, and it is unlikely tkat he will rem&in long in hack company, He eame through to tackle the leaders at the false rail in the October Handicap and won with a deal in hand. Cardsharper, Geira and Top Row wero filways near the lead. Mulatto ran a fine race, coming from a long way back to finish sixth. Mishna and Middle are two likely improvers. The Bigot won the October Handicap narrowly from Quadroon, who bad charge a furlong from the post, but all the honours of the race went to Lucullus Lad, who, with top weight, made all the paco. Tho Bigot CQofirmed the opinion that he is extra good in his class. Royal Minstrel ran a good race, but Lazybones never looked a possibility.
