(Received 21, 11.45 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Oct. 20. Weeks after tho opening of the Japanese offensive there fs still a stalemate at Shanghai. The Chinese are amazed at their own success at the expense of 100,000 casualties, as compared with 30,000 on the Japanese side. The Japanese have lost much pres, tige as a military Power. English and Ameriean naval and mjlitary chiefs are not impressed by the Japanese infantry and criticise their tactics, their equipment, and their marksmanship from warshjps and aircraft. The morale of. the Chinese remalns unsliaken despite daily bombing and hopeless facilities for the wounded, who are left to die, Although the Chinese have displayed splendid fightjng spirit, it seems inevitable that the Japanese will force them back, but not before they are strengthened by considerable reinforcements, and suffer heavier casualties. AU the indications point to a long struggle, _ t The Chinese claim that their forces in the Shanghai -province are advancing northwards towards Tehchow. The Japanese are apparently retiring, thus shortening their lines of communication, owing to Chinese guerilla warfare.
