Work on . State Housing Schemes

AUCKLAND, This Day. Forty carpenters, between the agee of 18 and 36, arrived by the Rangitikl to work on State housing schemes. The men responded to an advertisement in the News-Chronicle, London, giving m Post Office box number, which proved to he that of the agent of the Fletche* Cohstruction Company in. London. There were -over 800 applications, but when it was aseertained that the men had to pay their own fares a laTge number dropped out, The men engaged were guaranteed three years' continuous work, subject to competency, at 2/6 i por hour. They were informed that 150 men were. required for Neir Zealand. The present pay for carpen* ters is 1/9 1 in London and 1/6 in th# provinces. The majority are leaving Auckland this afternoon and evening to work at Wellington. About six are r6maining in Auckland. 1
