Mr. S. G. Holland, M.P., has been elected president of the Christchurch Busiuesstaen 's Ulub. Lieutenant-Colonel F. S. Vafnham, officer commanding the Wellington Regiment, whose home is in New- Plymouth, is attending a course of miUtary instruction at Napier. Captain Dai Evans, formerly chief accountant to the Rhodesian Railways, will arrive at Auckland from, the East by the Van Bees on Decembor 9 for a two months' visit to New Zealand. Mr W. S. Kent, district solicitor to the Public Trust Office at Napier, left yesterday morning on promotion to a similar position with the Christchurch office. Mr E. A. Wood, district inspector of factories in Hawke's Bay district, has received notice of his transfer, on promotion, to the Waikato district, with headquarters at Hamilton. He will be succeeder1 by Mr W. J. Berryman, who is being promoted from the Nelson district. Mr. E. P; Yaldwyn, manager of the Wellington branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has completed 50 years' service with the bank, and has retired. Yesterday in the palm lounge at the flotel St. George more than 100 clients of the bank met to say farewell to tlie retiring manager and to extend a welcome to his surcessor, Mr. A. McB. Brodrick. Engineer-Commander Ernest Edward Low, D.S.A., K.N.B. (retired), chief engineer of the inter-island steamer Wahine, has completed his last run in chaTge of that ship's engines, whi«-,h he has known intimately for all bul one year of her long service. To-day he retires from the serviqe of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, in which he has completed more than 32 years, of which 23 years have been spent almost continuoUsly irt the Wahine. This is a remarkable record of service, and one that, probably, is unique in the British mercantile marine.
