WOMEN'S INTERESTS AT THE SPRING SHOW
Women-folk who attended the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Society 's Spring Show yesterday and to-day found much to interest them and the women 's work in particular was of a very high standard and well worth viewing. Many very beautiful exhibits were to be seen in the needlework classes whicn were judged by Mrs A. M. McCorkindale, of Feilding. Exhibits of line handsewing, embro-idery, tatting and crochet work. tapestry work and .numerous other classes attracted a large number of excellent eiitries and the exhibit which won the challenge cup given for the best piece of work in the show was of a particularly high standarci to merit such an award. The cup was won by Mrs H. W. Waters with a beauti-fully-made very fine cotton crochet tablecloth. The runner-up was Mrs J. Newton whose hand-sewn .embroidered nightdress was also much admired. The knitting classes, judged by Miss II. M. Handyside, of Havelock North, were also tho centre of much admiration and the flneness and beautiful designs in some of the work were quite perfect. The work of two exhibitors, Miss Jean Juden and Mrs J. L. Woodhill was admired by everyone who saw it. Sugar-bag articles and soft toy exhibits were cleverly-mado and the prizes in the children 's classes were also well competed for. The floral section open to women 's organisations for the best collection of flowers, foliage and rock plants grown by members of each organisation attracted only one entry this year, probably because this is a class which requires a great deal of work and time on the actual show day or the day before and members cannot spend time beforehand in preparing their exhibit. The only exhibit, that arranged by the Sherenden Wotnen'e Division and Itistitute, well deserved a first place and was particularly beautifully arranged to represent "Ye Olde Flower Shop" with artistically arranged buttonholes, posies, shoulder sprays, halo sprays. and little posies of native flowers besides bowls and baskets of the loveliest blooms of many flowers. The whole exhibit was most cleverly aratmged with very artistic effect. Two stands were arranged by the Northern Hawke's Bay Federation of Women 's Institutes. On the first were exhibited the community work for the past year, a knitted layette from each institute, and these were most beautifc'ully made. Sherenden Women 'b Institute were awarded first place, Eskdale and Maruetotara-Waimarauia second equal, Bay Yiew and Puketitiri third equal, the judging having been done beforehand. The second institute stand was aTtanged for miniatur'e gardens in two sections, the first section to have the plants growing and the sqcond to be arranged just for effect. These little gardens were most cleverly made with miniature plants, lakes, paths, tiny summer hou&es and flowers and as the idea was quite a ne.w_, one the exhibit was of special interest and was greatly admired. The results of this institute competition was as follow: A section, Mrs McCarthy (Haumoana W.I.) 1. Mrs 0. J. Baker (Haumoana W.I.) and Mrs Otene (Te Awapuni W.I.) 2 equal, Mrs Scott (Haumoana W.I.) 3; B section, Mrs Edgecombe (Maraekakaho W&X h ,
Mrs G. M. EObbin (Ohurakura-Te Pohue W.I.-) 2, and Mrs A. McHardy (Bay Yiew) 3. Women-folk were once again very pleased to make use of the Plunket rooms where the Plunket nurses and members of the Plunket committee were in attendanee both show days and whose willing assistance was very much appreciated by many women an.d their little phildrens ,
