Deserting Chinese Crew (Eeceived 20, 8.45 a.m.) NEWCASTLE, Oct. 19. Thirty of the Silksworth's Chinese crew of 36 were to-day Temanded for a fortnight, bail being allowed each iii the sum of £100, The remaining six Chinese have not heen located. . The Silksworth is a British-owned cargo vessel, and is under a Japanese .chartor. The crew refuse to sail with matei'ials for a country at war with China. The Magistrate said that the cass Was no ordinary one of a crew leaving a ship. international mattera wCre involved, and he was not prepared to order the crew back to the ship at this stage. Later : The six menrbers of the Silksworth's Chinese crew who were missing when their 2G cojurades were charged at Newcastle yesterday ate now in Sydney. Thev were conveyed by car from Newcastle, keeping as much as possible off the main road, their movemcnt being directed by supporters of the ''Hands off China" Committee formed by the trade unions. The missing men are remaining under cover and intend changing their lodgings from night to night.
