Counter-Attack on Shanghai Front JAPANESE AIR RAIDS

(Eeceived 20, ll.oU a.m.) SHANGHAI, Oct. 19. The Japanese spokesman admits that the Chinese, instead of retreating, are being reinforced and counter-attacking on the Shanghai front. He indicated an extension of Japanese activities, under which all trains will be regarded as military objectives. The Chinese claim to have gained ground in ia counter-attack across tbe Shanghai-Woosung railway. The inhabitants of Nanking fled from their beds and sheltered in chilly dugouts during two Japanese air raids etarly this morning, in which they claim to have damaged 15 Chinese planes and 31 in raids on Hankow. Japanese warships shelled the treaty port of Pahhoi; shore batteries frustrated a landing.
