EXPLANATION DEMANDED
Attacks on Japanese Fishing Boats DUTCH INDIES INCIDENTS '(Eeceived 18, 10.50 a.m.)' TOKIO. Oct. 17. Mr Hawai, the FOreign Office spokesmen, stated to-day that an official explanation was being demanded frocn th«> Netherlanfis Government of incidents in the Dutch Indies, where a wArplane machine-gunned Japanese fishing-boats Japanse consular reports showed that while off Sumatra on September S0 a plane from the warship Flores riddled the Tokuei Maruno with 709 bullets, killing two and wounding two. A suspicion. that the ' vessel was poaching was found to be groundless. and the boat was released on Ootobe? 9. The next incident occurred off the Natuna Archipelago on Oetober 9, when a plane machine-gunned the Taishin Maru, wounding two. Such uction wa^ unwarranted because the vessel was» only getting water. However it was still detained.
