HAVELOCK NORTH SWIMMING
Annual Meeting and Electieu of Officer^
SUCCESSFUL SEASON Tlio annual meeting of the Havelock jSTorth Svn.mming Club was Iield last* iveek, Mr E. F. Leicestef presiding. The annual report tvas presented as follows: — Club membersMp fees were increased. More h.onorary nienxbers' tickets were sold, and a good Havelock North. and Heretaunga coxnbined carnival (the only night in which there was a "full house") seem to be the reasonB for a sxnall profit. Eor the club nights it must be remembere^ that bad Weather in conjunction with the epidemic ac* counted for small gates. Bearing in mind these factg it is easily seen that financially the eeason was good. The club was well represented both in straights, teama races and diving events, and all swiramers are to be heartily congratulated. We wish to place on record the performance of^ H. Christie xn the Hawke's Bay championships as being the first senior club member to obtain championship honours. Several most enjoyable inter-club polo games were palyed an'd5 after defending the Henry Williams Polo Cup against the Te Awa and Heretaunga Swimming Clubs, it was lost at the enA of the season to a second challenge from Te Awa. Four of the team represented Hawke's Bay against the Australians on the occasion of their visit. gin.ce the Rainbow Shield contest has been changed to champion§hip rules, this is the first occasion on which our team has been successful in winning this eoveted trophy. Taking the lead in the first carnival the club held this advantage right throughout, although the Heretaunga Club came up close in the last carnival. In the Henry Williams Challenge Cup, both clubs fielded teams weakened badly with epidemic restrictions and a cold spell. This contest was held in Havelock Noith baths on behalf of the Hawke's Bay Swimming Centre and Havelock North were successful in winning by two points from the Napier Swimming and Life-Saving Club. The committee wishes to place on perpetual record the great efforts and fine sportsmanship of every competitor in the abovC two conte3ts. It is heartening to think that this Club. «vith auch a small member ship can compete and prevail against clubs which have members up to at least three times as great. Thanks and congratulations to those who carried through the learn-to-swim idea with such wholehearted enthusiasm. The intention was to carry the classes on to the end of the season and the resulfcs in the short period, approximately two weeks before the outbreak of the epidemic, were nothing short of amazing. School children, filled the baths and after a few classes there were very few children who could not swim.- We cannot pass on from here without our deepest thanks to Mr E. Eiley for the way he organised the school children 's classes,' for withoUt his help there would not have been any "learn to swim." Our thanks aro due to tho Press for their assistance in reporting the clubs numeroua activities so thoroughly.
