DRINKING AFTER HOURS
Watersider workers & Hotel Lieensee Fined
RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT
Shaken by the fact that the car in which he was a passenger had just been involved in a fatal accident, John Campbell, of Port Ahuriri, waterside worker, allowed a fellow-worker, George John Cleary to take him to the Crown Hotel for a "steadier" a^ midnight ,on October 5. Unfortunately the lighted bar drew the attention of the police, with the result that the two men^ together with tho barman, William Townend, and the lieensee, George Ariel Graham, were fined for breaches of the licensing laws by Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate's Court thix morning. Sergeant G. F. Bonisch appeared for the police and Mr John Humphries for the lieensee and the barman. o Pleas of guilty were entered on the charge of selling preferred against the lieensee, other eharges being withdrawn, "The facte are somewhat unusual," said Mr Humphries. Cainpbell had beeu seated beside the driver of the car which had strnck and killed a man ia Hardinge road. This had upset him, and his f riend Cleary took him to the Crown Hotel and got the bartender to give him a brandy. This was followed by a beer, and the police entered at this stage. The Bench commented that the barman had gone too far in supplying liquor to Cleary as well. Campbell and Cleary were each fined £2 with 10/- costs, Graham £1 with 10/costs^ and Townend £3 with 10/- costs.
