RAIN AFFECTS WICKETS \
Tho 1937-38 cricket season in Hastings opened on Saturday when a start was made with the junior championship
eompetition. Conditions were not of the best, Tain in the rtiorning and light showers during the afternoon, affecting the wickets and outlield. However the teams revealed an eagerness to get the season under way and there was plenty of enthusiasm shown. Of the games played, only one outright win was obtained, the remainder of the fixtures 'being decided on the lixtures .being decided on the first innmgs count. Particulars of the various games are as follow: — Fruitworkers v Otane. — Battiug first, Fruitworkers made 206 (Heenan 82, Crombie 58, L. Galbraith 14, Flanigan 12, Broadhurst 10) Taylor 10; Phillips tkree for 18, Curley three for 36). In reply Otane made 134 (Higgs 42, Whalen 33, Drinkrow 12; Taylor four for 23, Hennan three for 30). Fruitworkers gained a three-point win by '72 runs on the first innings. Havelock North v Hastings H.S.O.B. — First use of the wicket went to Havelock who made 95 (Puttulo 47, Whitehead 13, Stratton 11; Toothill five for 35, Jones three for 3). Old Boys made 32 in reply (Moroney 13; Meissner three for 17, Davis three for 7). In their second innings Havelock made 78 (Pankhurst 38 not out; de Denne three for none, Gadd four for 17). At stumps Old Boys had lost nine wickets for 104 runs (Natusch 25 not out, Catherall 16, Moroney 11; Meissner three for 27). Havelock gained a three-point win by 63 runs on the first innings. Rugby v Hastings High School B. — Batting first School made 89 (Crerai 41, Apperley 14), and in reply Rugby made 146 (Wilson 48, Campbell 43. Tmiins 13, Scott 13, Tate 10).- In thcij second innings School wero dismissed for 47 runs (Waikare 19; Wilson t'oui for 3, Campbell three for 4). Rugby gained. a four-point win by au innings and 10 runs. Hastings v Hastings High School A. | — Hastings batted first to make 58 (McKenzie 19, Amess 10; Maaka five foi i 9, McDowell throo for 17). School re plied With 47 (K. Dyer 21, Maaka 14; Plank and Bowlands three wickets eaeh). Hastings in the second innings made 87 (Maaka four for 13) and School lost one wleket for 31 runs (McDowell 18 not out). Hastings secured a three-point win by 11 runs on tlw first innings. Whakatu v. Mahora.— The former batted first to make 147 (Love 45, Jolinson 31, McGregor 13; C. Lowe five for 494 S. Lowe three for 33). In reply Mahora compiled 70 (Paynter 15; Christison three for 31). Whakatu secured a three-point win by 77 runa on the first innings.
