Review of Club's Past Year's Activities
FINANCES IMPROVE
IFrom
WAIPAWA, Last Night. The annual report of the president of the Waipawa Sports Club,, presented at the annual meeting on Friday, states: — "In reviewing the affairs of tho club for the past twelve . months it gives me great pleasure to report that we had a successful year in every way. Though the weather was unfavourable at times, still, most of the members were able to get plenty Of play and the greens and courts Were well occupied right through the season. At the beginning of the season the finances were rather low and to augment them a bathing belle competition was run and was a great success. The functions organisod in correction with this effort were nearly all favoured with good weather. For a month we had a strenuous but also a jolly time and I think most of our members onjoyed it. "The annual tennis tournament also proved a great success and greatly beuefited the club financially. All the sections were at home to visitors during the playing season and I feel sure these visitors thoroughly' enjoyed the playing facilities which our extensive grounds provide. "A perusal of the audited accouuts, which have been posted to every member will show that our financial position is quite satisfactory. We cornmenced the year with a debit balance at the bank of £79 17/10 and imished up with a credit of £48 3/4. Turniug to the income and expenditure account you will see that the net proceeds of • the bathing belle contest amounted to £128 7/11, and the tennis tournament resulted in a profit of £43 17/1. The gain for the year was £83 10/10, which has been transferred to accumulated funds. I was disappointed to iind that there were £17 17/- outstanding subscriptions. This is not right. The club provides splendid grounds for the benefit of its members, and it is only right that each member honestly pays for those privileges. I trust those concerned will forward their subscriptions to the secretary immediately. "There is another matter that is glving the management committee and myself food for thought. That is the exceedingly small membership in the croquet section. The income from this section only am^mted to £12 2/-, which is not sufficient 'to pay for the upkeep of the green. Bearing in mind the great assistance we have had from this section in past years, we must consider this question sympathetically and trust that the croquet section will soon be able to bring their members up to normal strength. Before leaving this subject let me urge each section to make an effort to try and increase its membership. If you will look at the accouuts again you will see that the subscriptions by no means cover the expenditure. We have extensive grounds which can accommodate many more members than we have at present. * ' Congratulations are due to the members in the different sections who so worthily upheld the prestige of the club in the various competitions in which they engaged both at home and away. The tennis section, as mentioned earlier, held a most successful tournament during the season. Though feW in number the ladies of the croquet section had their usual gala days and also competed at tournaments in different parts of the province. The bowling section had the most successful season since it was established and rose to greater heights than they had ever done before. After a close contest with the Waipukurau Club we were successful in winning the Dillon Shield. But the greatest achievement was the winning of the champion fours competition against all the other clubs in the Hawke's Bay Centre. The team which added such lustre to tho club and came home with the pennant consisted oi Messrs Critchley, Adeane, Patterson, Eaglo (skip). Following on this success Messrs Shackelford aud Patterson won the champion pairs against all comers, and Mr Patterson also made a good showing in tho champion singles. "I sincerely thank the presidents of the sections for the co-operation in tho management Of the club, the members of tho management committee and the secretary, Mr J. B. Gould. The thanks of tho members are also due to Mr W. Clayton, the caTetaker, who has carried out his duties efficiently throughout tho year. Oiir thanks must also be exlended to Mrs Patterson for the very capable manner in which she controlled the tea arrangements,' nOt.only on the. ordinary club days but also during tho tournaments and on other special occasions." ,
