Railway Carriages Damaged at Wellington traffic disorganised

WELLINGTON, Last Night. | Railway traffic cntering andjeaving! the Wellington railway station was alightly disorganised about 6 p.m. tonight when a line of carriages was backed into oue of the buffer stops at the end of a platform. Nine carriages which were intended for the Palmerston North train leaving at 5.47 were being backed in by a shunting engine, but/ the driver failed to pull up in time. The rear of ths end- carriage in tho line atruck the bufEer forcibly, riding over the top oi it and throwing the rear bogeys off th( line. The coupling connecting the lead ing carriage to the engine was snappe! ofE clean and ncarly every other coup ling was either bent, broken or un done, while the buffer, a great bloel of concrete, was shifted on its founda fcions by the force of the impact. N damage was done to the bodywork oi the carriages. Those waiting to catch the train had an unpleasant watt while a new train was run into the platform. A quantity of goods which was contained in the luggage van of the derailed train had to bo transhipped and the Palmerston North train eventually departed at 6.20, a little over half an hour late.
