STEADY INCREASE

Aberdeen Angus Breed PRESIDENT'S 'ANNUAL REPORT « The steady increase in the Aberdeen Angus cattle in New Zealand during tho past year wae regarded as being highly satisfactory by members of the New Zealand Aberdeen Angus • Cattle Breeders' Association, who met at Dannevirke last night, Mr L. A. P. Sherriff^ of Taihape, presiding over a large attendance. Tho president, in his annual rcport, stated that the membership of the as-. 6ociation was now 141, an increase of 22 during the year. The stud herds had showed a steady increase, wliich was reflocted in the produce entries. The largest increase, however, was . iu bulls for breeding and crossing purposes. Aberdeen Angus again won the Meat and Wool cup for the best beef beast on the ground at the Wanganui show. This breed and crosses were well to the fore in the chilled beef championship, both on the hoof and on the hook. In connoction with the association 's sale at Dannevirke, it was noticeable that the interest of the public was not only in the sale but in the-tshow beforehand, continued the report. The as--sociation was indebted to Wright, Stephenson and Co., and the Southern H.B. 'Anctioneers' Association for the presentation of cups for the competition. This year m-iniature cups had been preeented for the herdsmen preparing the bulls which ob.tainq^ these tropliies. This was a step in the right direction^ as it gave encouragement where it was rightly due. "I am sure that we all realise Ihafc the breed would never keep its rightful position at our agricultural shows without herdsmen who take an interest in their job and can produce the goods," stated Mr Sherriff. "The Hawke's Bay Auctioneers, at the request of some of our members, organise.d,' a sale of both bulls and females at Hastings in June, when a large offering met with a ready sale. "The association is alive to the necessity of keeping the breed before tho public. This year, during National Week at Christchurch, a fat stock show was absorbed 'with the sale. Aberdeen Angus was well to the fore in the piaeings. This should assist breeders in Ihe South Island where the breed is showing an increase. Members can look forward with confidence to the future of the breed and our association, and I would ask for your assistance at all times in furthering the interests of tho breed." Mr J. E. Hewitt (Mangamaire) pointed out that as the association had such a substantial reserve that a larger sum of money could be devoted toward a more vigorous campaign of advertising and in pr'opaganda work in the interests of the breed. Tho breed had skown that it was on top, and although there was no danger of it being knocked out it could be brought still further before the public. "We are on top, and we have to keep where we are. To do that we must keep the breed before the public," said Mr C. Matthews (Gisborne). The president said that the council had in mind the question of publicity.
