Playing brilliant golf Miss Valmai Fleming (Christchurch) won the "Mellington women 's provincial cbampionsbip at Heretaunga to-day, def eating Mrs. Sloan Morpeth (Australia) . 6 and 4. Out. iu 35, the Christchurch player was four up at the turn and on the run home dazzled tbe gallery aud overwhelmed her opponent with remarkable golf, fimshing iu'two uuder fours. The weather was overcast with 'a cool south-easterly wind when the semifinals were commenced this morning. Mrs. Morpeth carried too many guns for Miss B. Chency, a £ ellow Aiistralian player. Miss Cheney started off well but became rather unsteady on the home • stretch. Mrs. Morpeth, taking five holes in a row, wou by 6 and 5. mTss* Fleming proved much too good for her clubmate, Mrs. H. MeKillop, in the other semi-final and won by 5 and 4. They hacl .an even tussle on the outward trip, Miss Fleming being one up at the turn. She outplayed her opponent on the run home. A gallery of 300 followed the final. Both Miss Fleming and Mrs. Morpeth started well, They halved the first hole in four. Miss Fleming drew one up with a birdie 4 to a 5 at the next, aud they halved the short third iu bogey 3 and the fourth in bogey 4, The Australian found a bunker at the fifth, After she had misseit a nine-foot putt Miss Fleming drew 2 up. They halved the uext. Miss Fleming duffed her brassie second going to the 3eventh but reached the green in 4 and saused a sensation by sinking a 20-foot outt for 5. Her opponent was quite iurprised and three-putted, losing the h,ole 6 to 5. Rain fell going to the long eighth. There was another sensation at the tenth when Miss Fleming holed • out from off t'he greeu for a birdie 3 and took the hole easily. The Australian found a bunker and lost the next hole > 4 to 6 but got one back at the twelfth with good wood shots, taking the hole in 4 to 5. They halved the next and Miss Fleming lay dorrny 3. The end came When she played a magnificent shot off the fourteenth teo to withiu two fe/t of the pin. Mrs. Morpeth was short and took 4 for the hole. The Heretaunga trophy was won "by Mrs. M. H. Godby (Christchurch'), who beat Miss j. Brodie (Wellington) in the semi-final by 1 up and then beat Miss S. Collins ■ ^Wellington) in the final 2 and lm.
