MASTERTON RACES

Speeial to Herald-Tribuuc.)

Review of The First Day's Running ROAMING SURPRISES

MASTERTON, Last Night. Forin 'on the opening day of the Masterton meeting .worked out mucli better than spring form usually does, tho only surprise being the win of Roaming, a f'resh horse, who was not eonsidered forward enough by his eonnections to merit substantial support, and he came home at double figures. Might scored attractively in the principal handicap after a slowly-run first half-mile. He is very fit just now, but his wins at Masterton and Otaki were not very trying tests from a New Zealand Cup point of view. Aretic King will he improved with the race, but Pukeko 's form was *hard to understand, Pukanui scored convineingly in the Bprint, even though being taken to the front too soon, hut Brunhilde was unlucky, She was last away after being troublesome at the barrier, and was all over the eourse in the straight. She finished strongly, and it now looks likely that she wiU materialise, as she gave promise of doing in her two-year-old season. Clessamor, having his first race of the season, ran well and looked a possibility 100 yards from the post, but his condition failed him. The Hastings-owned Gay Son was the best of the juveniles. He failed in the ,mud at Martonfi but was a dilTerent horse on top of the ground. He is a very true galloper and he never left the issue in doubt in the Nursery Handicap. Peerless, having her first race, galloped greenly. She is also by Beau Pere, and has ample scope for improvement. Twenty Grand was much the best of the others. He is a , eensible colt by Koomela and may take a little time. It was condition which stood to Son and Heir in the hack sprint. The former Hastings-owned Lucullus Lad collared him 100 yards from the post, t Son and Heir was the better seaed and he got the verdict in the iu»t few strides. Thala was prominent in the early running, but petered. outj Alunga is a likely improved in thei class. Sliy won the Highweight Handicap from Hazoor only after a terrific struggle. Pladie was a long way hack early, hut had moved up running for the home turn and this effort in th'e middle stages of the race left him nothing in reserve for the battle down the long straight. The Hawke's Bay-owned Lady Chat proved hGrself a smart- maiden by outclassing the field in the Maiden Stakes. She ran to the front at the end of two furlongs and thereafter had the field flat out without making any impression on her. She looks good class. Eoamiug, who has heen spelling since last autumn when he recorded a series of disappointing perforaances after liis transer from the South Island, was too elassy for the hacks in the Lawn Handicap. He looked very big in condition, hut evidently the stock of Nightmarch race best that way. He was always in the first three and drew away to score easily by four lengths. Royal Record, the favourite, was unlucky in having to make the pace. Taro should improve quickly on his showing to-day, and Joe Louis ran well enough to suggest possibilities. Le Toquet was well up early, but failed to run onv. Free Gold showed marked improvement on his Otaki running, stieking on much better. Siegmund, -who returned from open eompany to hack class through tho amendment to the hack status, walked away from the field at the fiuish of thq Electrie Handicap. Sunny Blonde, who made most of the pace, hung on for sepond well clear of tho otherg, tho best of whom were Lady Siegfried and Settlement. Hamarin was interfered with, and Lustral was hopelessly left at the start.
