"Mahora" Pedigree Stud« Th'e ^Mahora" stud of Large Whites, Tamworths and Berkshires1, the property of Miss G. Breen, Hastings, was founded on the best available blodd lines in the Dominion, and 5iS stock is well noted for quality, har.di-! ness and prolifieacy. ' Since its ineeption, this stud hiB M* deavoured to combine breed character with performance, and its succesa in this direction has been proved by the fact that three Dominion records have .been achieved for litter weighte at eight weeks. Waione 18-3 set two successive records of 13 and 12 reared, scaling 6391b. and 5941b. xespectively, which is cla-imed to be a world 's record, whila Mahora Starlight, in her flrst litter of 10 reared, averaged 44.61b., and secured tho honour of the heaviest maiden litter, all litters being offieially recorded by the Depaxtment of Agriculture. Theffe iigures definitely proya that constitution has been well maintained. At the 1935 Eoyal Show, with 10 en* tries, this Stud secured live firsts, threo seeonds and two thirds. in th© Larg* White classes, truly a creditable periormance. The' "Mahora'* herd of pedigree Milking Shorthorns was founded some 36 years ago by the late Mr Andrew Breen, and since, by careful selection in the hard of dairy stock, true to herd characteristics for type and production, has been maintained at high standard. At the 1935 Eoyal Show held at Hastings in 1935 the stud annesed the Itoyal Show Champion bull and Keserve Champion cow, and gained most pointf in the AHlkiug Shorthorn eection. : The senibr herd sire, Birkland BrewOr (Eoyal - Champion 1935), who ka« numerous championships, was bred froia .Pukikiti Queen, C.O.E., 4981b. fat, at 19 years, and Birkland Dairymaid, C.O.E.', 7221b, fat at 18 years. ■ The junior herd sire, Waimea Herlt-i age, was introduced to maintain production ahd type. The "Mahora" studs gained the coveted Walker and Hall ■ Shield for most points in pedigree stock at the Kew Zealand Eoyal Show, 1935, * - i The "Eiver View" Englisl Berkshires. Pure English Berkshire blood is strongly irifused in Mr. J. P. Swain's Eiver View" stud at Eskdale, the foundation of which was laid by purchases. from- leading breeders in ths North and South Islands. All are bred , on the outdopr system, under ideal con1 ditions. In selecting the foundation stoek the greatest attention .was paid to the matter of obtaining the xight type of pigs for export requirements, conibining early maturity, prolifieacy, and constitution. The outstanding characteristics of the English Berkshire aie thriftiness, ability to put on weight at an early age, and quality of carcase. Berkshires hve been popular in New Zealand since the early days and are iucreasing in demand,
