Easy Formulas for Making Whitewash Whitewash atf ordinarily made is a mixturo of 51b. of quicklime to a gallon of water. This, however, has littld b.inding power;^ if such a material as the curd of skim milk is added, with some - disizifectant such as zinc suiphate (which will keep the casein from dissolving) or even salt, the binding power of the whitewash will be materially increased. 1. The following is the formula oi the Lighthouse Board of the UniLed States Treasury Department for outdoor exposure: — Slake $ bushed of uuslaked lime with 9 gallons of water; keep the same covered during the proeess; add a peck of salt previously dissolved in water; add 31b. of ground. rice put in boiling water and boiled* to a paste; 41b. of powdered Spanish White, and 11b. of clear glue dissolved in water. Mix these thoroughly and let the mixture stand for severai days. Keep the whitewash thu-s prepared in a portable furnace, and when used apply it hot with a whitewash brush. 2. Another formula for weatherproof whitewash for fences, the oucside'of buildings, etc., often recommendedf' is as f ollows: — 1 bushel of unslaked'Jime in 12 gallons of hot water; 2lb. of common table salt; 11b. of zinc suiphate dissolved in 2 gallons of water; mix thoroughly, and add 2 gallons skim milk. 3. Another good formula given by the Government is as f ollows: — Slake 1 bushel of lime in 12 gallons of water; add 121b. of rock salt dissolved in 6 gallons of boiling water, and 61b. of Portland cement. To prevent whitewash from rubbing offr loz. of alum a ghllon will keep it firm to the wall, Flour paste may be added for the same purpose. About 1 pint of molasses or sugar solution added to* 5 gallons of whitewash will render the latter soluble and consequently will penetrate the wood or plaster, making it stick better. One pound of resinous soap or coininon bar soap dissolved in a gallon of boiling water added to five gallons of whitewash will give the latter a gloss like oil paint. One pound of sodium silicate will make a fireproof cement.
