ABERDEEN ANGUS 355 Guineas for a Two-Year-Old DANNEVIRKE SALE The popularity of Aberdeen Angus cattle as a beef breed was demonsirated by the widespread interest taken in- tbe annual sale of pedigree bulls held under the auspices of the New Zealand Cattle Breeders' Association at Dannevirke yeBterday. There was a record attendance of buyers from all parts of the North Island, including several from the South Island. JThe prices made were a record for stud saies bekl »t the Dannevirke saleyards. Yesterday's offering was the largest yGii niade by the association, when about 120 bull3 were submitted on behalf of many wellknown breeders. A large percentage of the bulls came forward in very good order, and a nnmber showed exceptionally fine hreeding The top price for the sale was 355 guineas, for an outstanding two-year' old, Jolly of Kowhiwhi, offered on account of Mr. Xi, A. P. Sberriff, of Taihape ahd purchased by Akitio Station. Other similar-aged bulls offered by Mr. Sherriff made 250gns. and 21Q gns. Most of the yearling bulls AV«ro very attractive, and the top price lor these was '330 guineas, for Sussex "of Gwavas, offered on account of tho Jfistate of Carlyon and purchased by Mr. Thacker, of O'Kains Bay, Banks Peninsula. From the same stud anotker yearling made the splendid price of 300 guineaB, the purchases being Mr. J. K. Richardson, of Te Akau. ■ Prior to the sale a competition was held in which many bulls competed in the three classes. A high - standard of quality waa . shown, the placed bulls being particularly good types that were fully chafacteristic of the breed. Mr. J. Webb, the well-known judge, of Taihape, made his awards as follows: — Two-year Told bull, Mr. L. A . P . Sherris 1 and 2. Yearling' bull, Estate of Carlyon, Gwavas, 1 and 2. Best; gTQUp of three bulls, Mr L. A. P. Sherriff 1, Estate of Carlyon- 2, Mr. J. El. Hewitt, Managamaire 3. Mr. Sherriff won bothj the Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and the j Southern Jdawke's Bay Stock Auctioneers' Challenge Cups for the best group of three bulls and the best two-year-old respectively. Bealisations on account of the varioub breederfi were as under, the entu.es having been bred'by them except where speciaily mentioned. The selling throughout was brisk, with competition very keen. A total of 109 bulls were sold .under the hammer, and the tbtal saies realised approximately £7lH!0, averaging almost 64 guineas.
