MAZIR UNLUCKY

Our Own Correspondent.)

Defeat of Marie's Acre at Auckland FORM IN THE NORTH

(From

AUCKLAND, This Day. A very promising two-year-old seen out for the first time at Ellerslie last week-end was Gay Hussar, a ftne typd of gelding by Light Brigade from Carrah. His third on the final day was marked by determination and as he kas not been unduly hurried his future appears to be bright. Another youngster that took the eyt at Ellerslie on Monday was First Flutter, a ckestnut filly by Captain Bunsby froiu Marchette, owned by the Wellington sportsman, Mr C. E. liobertson and trained by A. Cook. The dam of this youngster is a half sister by Limond to Te Kara, Lucius, Queen March, Te Hoia and the recent Indian winner, Kahapa, so that on breeding alone she should be good. First Flutter claims engagements in coming classic races. Lelt several lengths at the post and tlien rushed round the field to take up the running and set a torrid pace in the Mitckelson Cup, lt was not sui- I prising that Knight of Australia weakened into. sixth place ; in itself this was a phenomenal perforrnance and those who appreciated it seeured their reward in a double-figure dividend in the Spring Handicap. The Windbag i gelding is baok to his very best and i another good stake ought to go his ; way in his present form. Another handicap horse that should j not be long in making a return' to his supporters is Mazir, whosfe third over seveu furiongs last Saturday w^s ratlier surprising, even after his bolil showing in the Paeroa sprint. He was last away in Monday's Spring Handicap and then finished up sixth, albeit some distance away from the winnei. Mazir is now at a very nice position iu the handicap and he is one that should get on the winning list very shortly. With some valuable stakea coming along shortly the big chestuut's prospects are particularly bright. Scotland's Programme. - Last week-end the trainer of Scotr land was uncertain whether his chargo would go to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup or to keep him for the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day, while the question of competing at Trentham next week was also perplexing him and the owner. Scotland went two very fine races at Ellerslie, appearing to be very unlucky in the Mitchelson Cup, while on Monday he was in the ruck most of the way and Ufever got ont until the straight was re&ched. finally finishing sixth. The Acre gelding would uod lose any frienda by these showings ; he is due for another win at any time. It is always interesting with a view to weighing form to consider the sort of run some horses receive in important races. For instance, in the Mitchelson Cup, at the end of tliroe l'urlongs. those whipping in the field were Entail, Boomerang, Master Brierly and Kiltowyn ; the only one of these to improve much thereafter was Boomerang, who wound up in seventh place. In the Spring Handicap on Monday those in the ruck at the end of two furiongs were Scotland, Boomerang, Fersen, Entail and Mazir, the lastmentioned pair being tailed right off. All except Fersen had improved considerably at the post Tui Nui Unlucky. ' Two maidens that showed some pace at Ellerslie were Tui Nui and Maereana. The former was certain to win his first race any time now, but unfortunately he was injured during his race at Ellerslie and he will be missing for a little time at least. Maereana is a bit uncertain at the harrier, giving her first a good start the first day. Getting away much better on Monday she finished fourth in the event won by Besiege, so there is hope for her. A feature of the racing so far as it has gone in the province this season is the strength of the maiden class, many of wliom can be said to be on the verge of winning. Marie's Acte was snch a good thing beaten last Shturday that he was regardtid as having a mortgage on whatever i-ace he contosted on Monday and so his starting price at odds on appeared to he quite in order. However, a lot of use was made of him arid perhaps the liard race he had on the first day rnight have left its efI'ects. for third was the best be could do. With two maidens participating in the finish5 one winning aiid the other being lieads away- in fourth place the form did not read very well at all. Marie's Acre should soon make amends for he is capable of winning tbe opcn sprint at Cambridge on Labour Day if reserved. Black Musk ran a fair race in the hack sprint last Saturday and with a mile on the second day he seenied well placed. He slioWed up for most of the journey and then retired at the bottom of the straight, the tesponse to his rider's urging being very weak indeed. Black Musk appeared to be a bit distrossed alter tbe race, bo that he could not- huve been himself. This defeat catne at a time whcn it looked as if the Musketoon gelding would have to be cousidered in future handicap and cup contests, hut after Monday's failuro the old political maxim, "wait and sc6," will have to be applied.
