The flnel of the Hastings Golf Club championship knock-out matches was played at the weekend over S6 holes, between E. A. Mnrley and W. A. Wilson, when the fowner won pn the laet green by two up. Both players are on a three handicap, and the correctness of their status waa borne out by Ihe evenness of the match, which ■eo-sawed first in one player's favour and then in the other's. At no time during Ihe game was there more than two holes between them. Tho morning round commenced with three halved holes in 5 , 4, 4. At the fourfcb Wilson found a bunker which cost b*m o stroke to clear, Murley waa nicely on the grean and scored o win by three to four. Murley also won the next, where Wilson placed his tee shot behind the bunkers to the left and Tia thrOugb the green with his pitch shot. It was Murley's hole three to four, making him two up. Wilson won a hole back at the next, when Murley's second found the ti-tree near tho green, reqjuirmg a ohfip out to daar. Wilson won four to five. Longlands was halved in bogey fives, and Hades in hirdie fours. The ninth went to Wilson in three to four, and the game stood all square at the turn. Wilson then won the tenth by four to six to stand one up. College and Punch Bowl were halved in fives and fours. Murley won the short thirteenth, Murley's in three to four and squared again. The fourteenth was halved in fours, but Wilson came again at Lands- , «nd for a win in four to five, to take the lead one up. Murley responded j at the short Gulf, which he won by J three to Wilson's four, again to stand all square and the last two holes being halved in fives and fours the first round ended "as you were." Aftarnoon Round. The wind bad increased to a half gale when the players hit off in the afternoon. Murley won the first with a birdie four, but Wilson got it back with also a birdie four at the 20th. Murley then won the Dunes in five to »ix after Wilson hadi visited the rough, but VVilson squared with a three to five at the short fourth. Murley played a hica tee shot to the green at the next. Wilson was again to the left, and Ms pitch shot being short, Murley won the hole three to four again to ■tand one up. The next hole, Flaxmere, waa halvad in fives for Wilson .to win the next five to six and again squared the game. The 26th, Hades, (420 yards) was the gem of tho game. Murley, with a good drive foilowed hy a beautiful second, found the green ahd lxoled an eagl© three, while Wilson, also playing two beautiful shots to reach the green, took two putts to score a birdje four, for a loss. Murley made it two up at the turn by taking the short itusheg in three to four. The 28th wenl to Wilson and the 29th to Murley, leaving the latter still two up. Wilson then spurted and took the next three holes in a row in bogey figui/es to stand one up and four to play. Landsend Was halved in bogey fours. Wilson was thus one up and three to play. Murley then took his turn, winning the 34th with a three to Wilson's four after the latter had had a visit to a bunker. The game was all square with two to play. Murley again assarted himself St the 35fcht The Terrace, by scoring a birdie fbur to Yvilson's bogey five, and standing oue up and dormy. At the last hole Murley got a beautiful drive and waa on with his second to score another hirdie four, Wilson struck trouble in the scrub and found a hunter on clearing, Teaching the green with his third. Two putts to each and the hole to Murley in four to five, saw him win tbe match by two up, and take the 1957 championship title for ihe first time after many previous attempts.
