(By 1
The bowling season had its offlcial "kick off" last Saturday, when the president of the Gentre, Mr. W. Ross, presided at the Centre ceremony on the Havelock North green. Though the weather was not on its best behaviour, there was a large crowd present, and despite the cold, enjoyable games were played. Points of particular interest in tho president 's speech were the visit of the unofficial British party about Christmas time, and the intentiOn of the Manawatu Centre to bring 16 rinks through on a date to be arranged, if aoceptable. Plans eo far arranged for the visit of the Bri,tishers is that they play all one-day in Napier. The Centre, no doubt, will have furthor particulars later to give out. Mr. Nash. president of the Manawatu Centre, in his letter to Mr. Ross, stated that the Manawatu players had such a jolly timo on their last visit that they are deeirous of again visiting Hawke's Bay, and j he woqld be very glad to bring the team through. That they will be heartily welcomed goes without saying, for everyone who played against the visitors on the last occasion will long remember the enjoyable games. It will be hoped the visit can be arranged for early in the season so as not to clash with the Centre championsliips and other matches herc. New Port racilities. THe r'ort ciuu was a sceno of gaiety on fcsaturday for tno officijai opemng or the new pavilion and green. Ax>propriateiy nuined tlio "J. P. bmith. i-'uvi-tion," iu hoyour of tho founder and present patron of the club, the new twostorey buildiug prcsents a srnart appcarance and is up-to-dato in every detail, an.d attractively and comfort- • ably furnished. It says soinethiug lor the euthusiasm of the Port mcmbers when they were able to raise, voiuntarily, eoine £200 towards the cost, and do the work of erection themselves. At the head of affairs is Mr. R. Y. ^TcCarthy, and under "Jim's" guidance the club can look forward to a prosperous season. As a gesture of appreciation of the services of the past president, Mr. H. Mayo, he was handed a framed photograph of himself. Napier Club's Jubilee. The Napier club this year celeDrates its jubilee, and later in the season proposes to nold a social to commemorate the event. Further reference to the history of this club will be givon in lliis column at an early datc. Down Dunedin Way. Mr. "Bob" Sissons, who was formerly a mem'oer of tho Hastings club and later o£ the Napier club, is now resident iu Dunedin. He was on a visit to those parts last week, and in a ehort conversation with him over the tea table he informed me that bowling is very popular in tho South Island, and the players are very keen. In Dunedin they have the benefit of a long twiligiit, and in tbe summer can- play bowls until 9 o'clock at nigkt. Most of the championship matches are played in tho evening. "Bob", who was looking in the best of health, is as keen as ever on the game, and is evidently enjoying his stay "way down south." Hastings Club's Opening. The pennants at the Hastings club will be fiying on Saturday afternoon, when the club's oPening will take place. A change has taken place at the Hastj ings green, jn that the ladies are to occupy the small green £or croquet during the season. To give the bowling green a spell, and also to water it in | the dry weather, it is the intention of j the committee to close the green every Monday. Given a fine day no doubt There will be a representative attendance at the opening on Saturday afternoon. Rtt'ect of Dry Weather. The dry weather is having its effect on the greens, and green superintendents are having an anxious time. Already the lictses have been brought into use on xpany greens, and if rain does not soon fal] it is going to be a probleni. to keep the grass growing, especially where the seed has been sown this year. Careful cuttiug ahd rolling will have to be done to ensure the playlng areas standing up to the season 's wear and tear.
