JAPANESE FORCES Motorised Columns Sweep Wide Front CHINESE IN RETREAT

Oct. 12. /The Times Tokio' correspondentetates that Japanese motorised columns are pushing forward as speedilv M possiblo to gather the fruits of their victory at Shihchiachwang on a 70-mile crescent-shaped front on the ori the south-west Lwancheng. They have already captured Chaochow and western tip of wliich is Tsinghsing and Ylanshih, 20 miles south of Shihchiachwang. The farthest advance has reaehed Kaoyi, another 10 miles southward, where the Chinfese are concentrating. The Japane-se bombing of the Chinese avenues of retreat by troop trains continues. The Japanese are still prossing their advance toward the Peiping-Hankow tailway. The Chinese, some of whom are fighting desperat erearguard actions, are hastily digging defences in the neighbourhood of Changteh, a large walled town in nortfiern Honan, in the hope of stemming the general retreat. The Japanese capture of Tsinghsing is important, as it cuts the raiiway to Taiyuan The Japanese from the north have captured Hsinchol, 40 miles north of Taiyuan, which is isolated from the raiiway.
