. « - Crownthorpe Fancy Dresses The annual gala night for the Crownthorpe and neighbouring schools eventuated on Friday, when the fancy dress ball was held in the Sherenden Hall, the function being an unqualified success socially and financially. Although not so many children romped the floor as on several previous occasions, still their energy and joy wero unlimited and the crowd of parents and friends were entertalned jvith grand marches and folk dances, tho intricate steps of which the children executed with ease and grace. phow-' ing very careful training. Their prettity colouredi fancy dresses further enhanced the gay scene, a balloon dance being especially oolourful and pretty. Mr G. H. Treseder was M.C. and Phil Walden's orchestra was in attendance, and the excellent music supplied was greatly appreciated and belped much towards the success of the evening. At 10 o'clock the children left the fioor to do full justice to the delectable supper of fruit salads, jellied oranges and various savouries prepared by a working committee of ladies (Mesdames Olarkson, Gibson, Gardiner and Whyte). The tables looked extremely tempting, laden with all the good things so beloved of children, huge . bowls of variously-coloured iceland poppies being the main feature in the decorative scheme. ' The adults then took the floor, thoroughly enjoying their turn till 2 a.m., a delicious supper being 6erved in the interlude. Thanks go to Lady Russell and Slr Andrew Russell, who so kindly judged the fancy costumes, the children boing divided into three groups according to school standards. The following were the first prize winners, Lady Russell making the presentations : — Standards 3—7: Girls, Pauline Nelson. (Maori Maiden) 1. Boys, John Whyfce (heef-eater) 1. Classes P. to Std. 2. — Girls: Patricia MeDougal (Scottish Dancer). Boys, Graham Gibson (Hiawatha) 1. Tiny tots (under schOol age): John Dysart (tram conductor) and Tcm Agnew (swager) 1 equal. Extra prizes (seConds and thirds), were kindly donated by Lady Russell, and went to: Std. 3—7: Girls, Elizabeth Usticke (Dolly Varden) 2, Fernley Agnew (Pierette) 3. Boys: Gordon Usticke (toy soldier) 2. Special: Rae Treseder (Japanese Lady). Also extras to tiny tots: Kenneth Tresedier (Puck), David Agnew (cowboy) and Dawn Agnew (Gipsy ghl). Adults in fancy costume were: Mesdames Clarkson (fishing net), Gibson (clown), Gardiner (Spanish dancer) and Whyto (Florence Nightingale). The thanks of the school committee are extended to the donors of prizes, Lady Russell, and Mesdames Butt, Gibson. Clarkson, Dysart and Whyte, and to Mr H. Pearce, and indeed to all, who. in various ways, helped to once more make the function the undoubted success it was.
