Month's Work in Waipawa County

WAIPAWA, Last Nighf. The following is the report submltted by the engineer, Mr V. E. Douglas, at the mbnthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council to-day. Waipawa Riding. — The washout near Rathbone 's on the Otane Argyll road Was repaired. As instructed, Cr. Butler and niyself inspected the~War Memorial Park at Tikokino and have to rdport to the council. General maintenanee and patching work done. Ongaonga Riding. — The Leyland lorry moved over to Hickey's road towardk the end of the month attd work is proceeding. The cattle stops at Fletcher's crossing bfidge and the Papa Cutting bfidge afe .being repaired. Homd patching was carried out at the foot of the Hinerua Hill and fUfther work is necessary. Clinton Riding. — Motai was spread on the South Makaretu road and on Black's road between Miller's and the big culvert. This work and the hill section is now compieted. Gradihg was doiie on the Clinton-Sherwood, Clin-tOn-Taliapau, Severinsen's and portiOn of Biaek's roads. On the ccmplction of BlUck's road and short roads ifL the Vieinity the horse grader will move out of the riding. As authorised by the couneiij Cook's road was inspected by Cr Thomsen and myself, and it was decided to cut back three points on the hill section and ni-ctai approximately half a miie of the ilat. Takapau Riding. — Repaifs were made to tho AshCott-Waipukurau road when it was damaged by the recent flood. Work has been comitteiiced un pfoteetiVe Work Ut the point where the Tuldpo river is efoding ihe Ashcott-Waipu-kurau road. Timber piles are boirtg. The length- of this work will be approximately 180 feet. in additiou a deflection groyne is being constructed to preVent the river cutting behind the proteetion work and thfee small right-angle groynes projecting from the timbef wall will encoterage silting.- The wholo work is boing carried out as far as possible with old timber of which we fortunately have a good stock. Annual overhaul. — This has been eafried on as opportunity officred and the following .bridges have been dealt with: Makaretu bridge: Two new stringers installed to replace dei'ectivo stringerS and nine new deck planks. Makaretu bridge 66: One new strmger and 4t) decK planks have been installed. Argyll water raoe: Tenuera lor cleanmg have been called for this mcotmg. The question of a new sub-race in Mr Patterson's property was cousidered by the sub-committee appomled and pefmission was granted for tiie construction of a race in this inStance only. This permission is not to be takou iiS a precedent. i'orest Gate water raco. — A plan of the water race has been prepared and the matter of incidence oi rating will now be furthef considered bjltho Bub-i conlmittee appainted by tiie Argyll Water RaCe Committee and myself. Crushet: The crusher has now ceased work at Thomson *s bridge and will be dismaiitled and re-ereetetL at the Vitiv pawa river bridge on the Onga-Tikokino road as previously decided. The recommehcenlent of cfushing operations will be deiayed till the now winch and sooop is available. Leyland lorry. — This compieted the metalling of portion of Black's road and then moved to Bickcy's road. Fernhill-Takapau madn Iiighway. — Giading aud general maintenance. The l'oad has now been remotalled between the junction with the Takapau-Olhiton road and the Takapau Cnd. Reconstruction of One milo through Tikokino: Work is proceeding. Pfactically all cut atid fill has been compieted and a start has been made With the spreading of pit metal suffacmg, Waipawa-Pouf orere inaiti highway: Cfading and getieral maintenatiCe. The SUpply of Chips fbr sealing one inile of this road at the Waipawa end has been commetieed. Waipawa-Tikokino main highway and Waipawa-Ongaonga inain highway: Gfaditig work in each section. Some Work was cafried out on drain cleaning tiOar Ruataniwha. Waipukurau-Matamau main highway: Grading, general maintenance and patching. The metalling by-contraet between the Otawhao main road and Ihe Manawata bridge was commenced. When this is compieted the wliole of this highway will have been remetalled this year except for the sealed portion and the stretch between Takapau atid the Otawhao main road corner. -i,^.
