PAKOWHAI GATHERING
The Pakowhai Women's Institute held' its October meeting in the Church Hall on Thursday last, when Mrs. Whiltington presided over a good attendance of membeTs. Several visitors were welcomed, including Mesdames Harwood and Speakman, who have recently shifted to other parts of Hawke 'is Bay. The meetmg opened by singing the Greeting Song followed by the Creed. When the business part of the programme had been disposed of, two Havelock North Women's Institute members, Mesdames Bond and Blair, gave a very delightful hour with the composer, Chopin. Mrs. Bond gave a talk and read extracts from a book on the life of Chopin, and Mrs. Blair and Mrs. Bond feelingly played several piano selections by the same composer. All were unanimous in their praise to these two ladies. Miss M. Holmes gave the Golden Thread talk, the subject this month being "France." A collection of eggs for .St. Mary's Home, also gifts suitable for the lepers at Makogai, were brought by members. Several antiques were displayed, tho articles being very fine epecimens mdeed. Miss E. Gabrielsen read a very full description of the district federation lialf-yearly council meeting held recently, and several matters arising out of the council meeting were discussed. Cookery books, Christmas cards and Calendars were in great demand. The motto for the month was "In creating a cheery atmosphere we are helping one ajnother." ting j\ 'r the flower show to be held in . ber. Miss li 's stock was first in the best bloom etition. Mrs. Howard (azalea) and Iiouston (pansy) tied for second place Mrs. Russell (rhodo- 1 dendron), and Mrs. Gledhill (bilbergia) being third. Best nightgown costing 3/-: Miss Howard and Miss Lowe (equal) 1, Miss Boyle 2, Mrs. A. Bartlo 3. Several members intimated, that they would like to have a croquet club formed in Pakowhai. Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Parker were thanked for making the very fine posy and shoulder sprays respeetively, for the half yearly federation meeting. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Morley, Mullacrane, Patriek and Pedersen, Misses Moore and Patriek.
