"OFFICER IN TOWER"
Sympathies Elsewhere LONDON," Sept. 4. Writing that' his sympathies lad always been elsewhere than in Engr land, Mr. Norman BaHlie-Stewart, who was sentenced to five yeara' penal servitude "or betr^ying secrets to a foreign Power, has left England. The former ''Officer of the Tower," released from Maldstone Prison on Janu ry 20, soon after the death of his father, had not disclosed his intentions to :ome of hia slosest friends. He has written the following letter to a fri nd in London: — My dear, — I air writing, as ypu will note, from a strange country and am en route for further fields. I only left England yesterday and was realP ly sorry that I was unahle to see you before I left. As you know, my sympathie hqve always been plqewhere than in Eng-> land, and I am now going to put them to some constructive pnrpo^e. I now enter ipto a voluntary and pleapureable exile, and m^ leave-takP ing (perhaps I ought to aad ticket-of-'leave ta?s.ijg, as I aoi taking that -j with me as a souvenir) is only tipged with some regvet which I feel at parting from :ome of the rvally excellent friends I had. I hope in some cases, in your rwn, that I shall see "ou agaiu, under really Uappy circumstancee, .in — I've fqrr gotten the name of the plqce at the moment but I'll remember tp tell you later. Bungho, qld horse! I'll write you again soon. Yours ever, Norman. P.S. — You'll notice how jolly noncommittal I've been in this letter. Very discreet in fact. Well, it's because of the "Secret" Service. Fine body of men, but lacking in quite a lot of things. This letter was posted in Belgium.
