MANY VISITORS ATTEND SPRING RACE MEETING

Tbe spring meeting of tbe Hawlce's Bay Jockey Club beld at the Hastings raceeourse on Saturday provided an excellent day's sport wbicb was tboroughly enjoyed by everyone, but the dis.appointing weather, which was cold and widy, prevented the attractive display of spring fashions which is usually so much enjoyed by the women raeegoell. Few women ventured out in any but winter clothes, fur coats predominated and many wore heavy winter coats with fur triinmings or warm little suits which looked most attractive with lovely fur hecklets. As usual smart little toques were worn and tho less wise women who ventured forth in new and larger spring hats must have had many rcgrets because . it . was quite ainusing to notice that several women who arrived in these lan-ger hats were later seen to have chauged into tight fitting toques and berets. x The most interesting event of the day was the Duke of Glducester Cup race which was won most popularly by Soho, owned by the president, Mr. G. D. Beatson, and ridden by his son. After the race tho cup was presented on the lawn in front of the main stand, and after congratulations^'had been expressed by the Hon. H. A. Russell, he called upon Mrs. G. D. Beatson, as the president 's wife to present the cup. Mrs Beatson wore a smartly tailored deep nut-browu suit with a small brown hat and skunk furs. Among the officials' wives present were: Mrs. J. J. Gatenby, who wore a coat of spring greCn bouccle with deep collar and cuffs of silvery grey f'ox 'fur and a small. black velvet toque. Mrs. J. N. Lowry, navy blue tailored coat with revers striped with white and a navy to^ue. Mrs. T. V. Morrin, black ensemble worn with a black hat with bright quill througli the crown. Mrs. H. R. Peacock, deep blue suit worn with a mushroom pink fine wool juinper, fox furs and a blue hat. Mrs. J. W. Wedd, musquash. coat over a blue ensemble and a blue velour hat. Miss Audrey McLeod, deep brown bouccle coat with a large collar of brown fox fur and small brown toque. Miss Marjorie Ebbett, fur coat worn over a brown ensemble and a brown hat. Quite a nuinber of visitors were present from otlier parts, many having been staying in Napier and Hastings while taking part in the Dominion goli1 tournament last week. Among the visitors were: Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smitk (Marton), brown nutria coat and a brown velou» hat with quill trimmings. Mrs. G. L. Rutherford (Canterbury), musquash cpat over a deep periwinkle blue frock and a hat in the same shade. Mrs. Maurice MacFarlane (Canterbury), brown tailored costume worn with a small brown hat. Mrs. MacFarlane, navy blue swagger coat and a very smart navy toque. Mrs. W. Dunean (Hunterville), coat of Russian marmot with cape collar and a brown hat. Mrs. Duncan (Hunterville), marina green ensemble under a fur coat and a green hat. Mrs. J. Acland (ChristcTiurch), smartly tailored costume of grey pinstriped with white and worn with a navy blouse and hat. Mrs. Noel Triggs (Palmerston Nortk), navy coat over a navy and white frock, navy hat and stone marten stole. » Miss Betty Rutherford (Canterbury), black coat with a large fox fur collar and small black toque.
